The Lemaire Channel

Early in the third morning, we
started south through the Lemaire
Channel. It was a narrow channel,
filled with pack ice, with mountains
and glaciers on each side.
Crabeater seals lounged on the ice.
Two foot tall Adele penguins hopped
and waddled across the ice floes to
return to their rookeries high up on
steep snow-covered mountainsides.
Some cross as much as sixty miles this
way when they return from feeding at
sea.
