The Lemaire Channel
 |
Early in the third morning, we
started south through the Lemaire
Channel. It was a narrow channel,
filled with pack ice, with mountains
and glaciers on each side. |
 |
Crabeater seals lounged on the ice. |
 |
Two foot tall Adele penguins hopped
and waddled across the ice floes to
return to their rookeries high up on
steep snow-covered mountainsides.
Some cross as much as sixty miles
this
way when they return from
feeding at
sea. |
