The Rissell Family

In an Active Volcano

For our last landing, we sailed into
the huge flooded caldera of an active volcano. This caldera was 3 miles by
5 miles, and contained two underwater fumaroles . This is now the site of a Spanish research station.
There was a Norwegian whaling
station here until 1931, and old
whalebones and abandoned whale
boats lay about on the sandy shore.
Elderhostel literature suggested
that we bring our bathing suits
for a dip. Seawater mixed with
steaming water from the fumaroles
brought the water to about 60 degrees.
A few adventuresome people took
the challenge while most just took
pictures.
