Object Servers gear up for EJB, server support: Add persistence to your server. Apr 26th, 1999
Adding an object server to your web server can give you fault tolerance, on-line backup, and container managed persistence. Three object servers, Versant, GemStone, and Persistence have recently expanded to include EJB support in their product offerings.

Versant
manufactures both the Versant ODBMS and Versant Enterprise Container (VEC) that supports BEA Weblogic. Versant has now announced VEC support for IBM WebSphere, and will receive funding from IBM to provide ODBMS support for Web Sphere.

GemStone which partners with New Atlanta announced the release of the GemStone/J 3.0 EJB ORB-based EJB server that provides object transaction monitoring. Separately, Gemstone announced support for Java security components and architectures JCE, JSA, and JCA.

Persistence which manufactures PowerTier for EJB announced PowerTier 5.0 for EJB on Apr 19th. PowerTier provides "stateful" business-to-business commerce solutions and enterprise interoperability through RMI/IIOP. When combined with PowerSync it enables load balancing, cache replication failover,

New Interface Tools: Apache's Element Construction Set; Enhydra intros XMLC
Apr 25th, 1999
Two open source Java Server projects Apache and Enhydra now provide tools that bridge into the XML world. The Java Apache Project now includes a new Java API called the Element Construction Set (ECS). ECS enables generating of markup elements: HTML, DHTML, XML. But going XML one better, ECS can be extended to create tags for any markup language.

The Java Apache Project has made major strides in directing Apache toward Java. Last month, they introduced both the Server Page Foundation Classes, and also the MOD Java project, the purpose of which is to allow Java developers to extend Apache.

Enhydra provides several interface tools within the Enhydra Development Environment. These including XMLC, their XML compiler (released in beta), the Enhydra Jolt Compiler, and a stand-alone servlet debugger. Jolt is similar to JSP, but operates differently in that it helps prevent collision between UI design and Java development, and it turns DHTML into compiled Java classes.

Enhydra's new XMLC represents a major move toward an XML-enabled server. XMLC also produces Java classes but takes a different approach from Jolt, using XML and DOM. XMLC organizes all page elements as objects gives a UI designer complete freedom in page design editing. A presentation by Mark Diekhans shows an overview of the process. XMLC is included in the 2.1 beta release of Enhydra.

Server-related open source projects gain power, fame
Apr 16th 1999

Open source products are becoming more numerous and diverse and both Al Gore and the InternetWorld convention in Los Angeles are providing them some deserved attention. Even as year-old Mozilla.org now brings a product to market, a brand new open source startup RSDi, has quickly received focus for its highly diverse set of projects aimed at e-commerce.

Enhydra, one of the half a dozen or so open source Java Servers, has itself has not really made any major announcements in about a month. Yet it's just now receiving media attention from the general computer press. Dana Gardner in Infoworld writes that since there are open source operating system, browsers, and other components, then open source applications servers should come as "no surprise"

The surprise, however, has more to do with why no one noticed them before. Java Skyline lists six current open source server products (not even including the Acme server library).

All this attention comes on the heels of the print media's undue disaccolades towards Vice President Al Gore. It is however a credit to Gore's willingness to work with the Internet industry and foresight in recognition of the open source movement.

But open source is not limited by U.S. boundaries by any means, in fact, the opposite is true. In the security product market, open source is a major selling factor. Companies in the security market thus benefit by having foreign associates to produce their products so that they can market them world-wide.
The Linux Free S/WAN project in Europe, provides free open source Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC) tool. A similar multi-national IPSEC project exists for BSD called Open BSD.

And Entrust also markets their public key infrastructure (PKI) products with open source developer tool-kits, called open APIs. Originally formed in Canada, they are now headquartered in Plano Texas, but have offices in Germany and UK. Entrust hosts Entrust Secure Summit 99 this June in Orlando, FL. At InternetWorld they introduced Entrust Ready Gold, a testing facility for 3rd party product validation.

Oracle Application Server standardizes on servlets, EJB, CORBA Apr 8, 1999

In a move to standardize their approach to Java web technology, Oracle Corp will include servlets and upgrade its EJB support to 1.0 in it's Oracle Application Server (OAS) product, it was reported late Wednesday by both C/Net and InfoWorld. The new version OAS 4.0.8, currently in beta, also adds support for Java-CORBA and C++ and integrates with Oracle's Enterprise Manager and Internet Directory products. Oracle plans to make an official announcement next week at Internet World in Los Angeles.

Wednesday J-Clatter: Java and Web servers "For Real" and.. Who's got the EJ ball? Apr 7, 1999

CMP publications, reviews a series of Java and Web servers in this article from Information Week. Included in the review are BEA WebLogic, Web Objects, Web Sphere, Inprise Applications Server, Net Dynamics, Netscape (Kiva) Applications Server (and Microsoft's "Visual Interdev" tool).
Not to be out done..the Object Management Group (OMG) has their own list too.. plus a handy link to this extensive article from Cutter Information Corp (hopefully printer friendly PDF, otherwise, you have read part of it with your head turned sideways) on app servers.
More news on the EJB front.. "Referee's needed!"not waiting until Sun even drops the ball, OMG is already dribbling another one down court by way of an Applications Server specification and a full court press of technology briefings. But who really has the game ball?
"Cry foul and release the Rodmans of war..." Microsoft is crying foul once again that Sun has limited their ability to innovate - meaning they aren't allowed to windowize J++ any more. Meanwhile, Sun has been angling into MS's game by windowizing Solaris! One can sort of understand their plight.. especially since Sun now thinks Java is ready for building a spreadsheet server - Maybe MS should have licensed Java from Carmen Diaz...
But why worry..Baseball is back!! Now with ol' man winter, march-madness, and Duke stopped in their tracks.. And despite numerous rain delays, the matchup between the Yanks "new" ace Rog-uh the Rocket and the Oakland A's was a hum dinger that went in favor of Tony Phillips, Jason Giambi, Matt Stairs, and John Jaha and Co. It was a team effort.

Post scripts... I really wonder about creating a spreadsheet server with Java...as Dennis Watson probably would also. In this article from Byte, he identifies Java as being a "glue" language rather than a system language. But maybe that's another story.

IBM, Bluestone: "Open up EJB." Apr 3, 1999

IBM, Bluestone, and other vendors are requesting that Sun turn over control of EJB to a standards organization such as the OMG (Object Management Group).

EJB relies greatly on transaction processing and "two-phased commits", an area in which IBM and other companies have great experience and expertise. It's also an area which OMG and OMG members have studied and extensively worked on. Newly elected OMG board member Alfred Chuang of BEA Systems, notes that "standards, such as CORBA and Enterprise Java, have begun to converge. "

Sun claims that EJB is not ready to for an open standards organization yet. Sun plans to include EJB in it's recently announced Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) by the end of this year.
