WALTON'S MOUNTAIN MUSEUM

Total driving time is 65 minutes not accounting for any time you choose to stop

Leaving Oak Ridge, turn right on Rt 650 and go 1 mile to Rt 56 (James River Rd) At the BP Station, turn right on Rt 56 and go .75 mile to Rt 639 (Craigtown Rd.) Turn left on Rt 639 and go 10 miles.  After crossing a bridge over the Rockfish River the road will fork.  Take the right fork which is Rt. 617 (Rockfish River Rd.)  Continue on Rt. 617 for about 3 miles to the village of Schuyler.  Waltons series creator Earl Hamner, Jr. grew up in Schuyler during the 20s and 30s, and it was this gentle community that became his model for Walton's Mountain in the TV series.  Walton's Mountain Museum is housed in the former elementary school that ``John Boy" and his siblings attended.  Admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $4 for children 13-18 yrs.  Children 12 and under enter free.  Allow 45-60 minutes for tour and video.

When you leave the Walton's mountain museum parking lot, turn left on Rt 617 and go .25 mile and turn left on Rt 800.  Stay on Rt 800 for .25 miles to go see the New World Stone Company.  This 27-acre historic soapstone mill first opened in Nelson County in the 1800s with the discovery of one of the world's largest soapstone veins.  Notice the main mill building is made of soapstone.  The complex was recently purchased by a sculptor who plans to create an on-site artists' colony.

From the Stone Company, retrace your route back to the intersection of Rt 800 and Rt 617.  Turn left on Rt 617 and immediately take the next right on Rt 693 and cross over the bridge.  Note the dam on the Rockfish River to your right.  Stay on Rt 693 for 2 miles until it ends.  Turn right on Rt 722 and continue for 6 miles until you reach Rt 56 (James River Rd.)  Turn right on Rt 56 and continue for 7 miles back to Rt 650 (BP Station) and return to Oak Ridge.
