The Technique Of Scrimshaw
We strive to emulate the engraved powder horns that were done by the frontline soldier of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War periods. In doing so we use the simple and basic tools that were available to the soldier of that day and time, the knife, the awl and an occasional gouge and chisel. The pattern is laid out on the surface of the horn with a lead pencil and then carefully cut in using the formentioned tools. When that is done the surface burrs are polished away and the horns are given their final coloring. |
