Basic Techniques of Horn Construction
The task begins with the selection of the raw material, the horn. Not every horn is suitable for a powder horn. The size, shape, color and quality of the raw horn must be considered. Good horns for the job are few and far between. Secondly, the base must be cut and squared and the tip end must be trimmed and a hole bored in it. Thirdly, the large end must be plugged with some sort of wooden plug. Usually it was plain and was made of a soft wood such as pine or popular. Next the tip is shaped to suit the makers fancy or skill level, and lastly the horn is scraped and polished. |
