Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys)
Place: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, AZ, USA
Date: November 1999
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (= 600/5.6), tripod
Film: Kodak E200 shot at 320 and pushed 1 stop
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 100% of frame

Commentary: White-crowned Sparrows are ground feeders, and often seen in dense cover under bushes where they scratch out a winter existence. Personally, I like the hard-edged shadow created by the strong AZ sun and like the three dimensional effect it creates in this image. Many others would choose to use fill flash to lighten up this shadow.
