Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch |

Subject: Greater Scaup (Aythya
marila)
Place: Tempe, AZ, USA
Date: Winter 2002
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (= 600/5.6),
tripod
Film: Fuji Sensia 100
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 80% of frame
Commentary: Closely related to the very similar Lesser Scaup,
the Greate Scaup is a relative rarity in Arizona. But a few birds
have been found each winter with a flock of Lessers at the location.
The males are somewhat easier to tell apart than the females; judging
by the size of the black "nail" on the tip of the beak I think
this is a female Greater.
