Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch |

Subject: Great Blue Heron (Ardea
herodias)
Place: Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge, Oceanville, NJ, USA
Date: June 1985
Equipment: Nikon FE2, Sigma 400/5.6, car window
Film: Kodachrome 64
Exposure: Aperture priority center weighted meter
Scan: Minolta Dimage; 90% of image
Commentary: Great Blue Herons are widespread throughout the
United States, but vary wary birds almost everywhere but Florida.
Even at Brigantine Refuge in coastal NJ where they are plentiful, it
is mostly a matter of luck finding one that won't take flight when
any person or vehicle approaches.
Before I got a great deal on a used Nikkor 400/5.6, I relied on this
very inexpensive Sigma lens that delivered surprisingly good images
for the price.
