Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch |

Subject: Northern Bobwhite (Colinus
virginianus)
Place: Sandy Hook, NJ, USA
Date: June 1990
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor EDIF 400/5.6, TC14 converter (560/8),
car window
Film: Kodachrome 64
Exposure: aperture priority center-weighted meter
Scan: Minolta Dimage; 70% of frame
Commentary: Once common throughout NJ, this quail is now in
serious decline and has become hard to find there. After spotting
this bird in a grassy field from a distance, I was able to get my car
close enough for this shot taken from the car window. The bright
flower heads are a bit distracting, but I like the feeling of
wildness from this unkempt field. As usual for me, no fill flash was
used as I find it often makes the image look artificial, and I prefer
my nature photos to look natural.
