Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch |

Subject: American Coot (Fulica
americana)
Place: Phoenix, AZ, USA
Date: November 2003
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8, TC20E (600/5.6),
tripod
Film: Sensia 100
Exposure: aperture priority matrix meter, fill flash @ -1.7?
Scan: Minolta Dimage; 90% of frame (cropped to correct slight
tilt)
Commentary: Coots are the most abundant water bird in Arizona,
and can be found on almost any body of water, and as a result I have
lots of bad photos of them. The photographic challenge is dealing
with the wide range between the white bill and the very dark feathers
- a difficult exposure problem on narrow latitude film.
