Subject: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius)
Place: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, AZ, USA
Date: October 2002
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (= 600/5.6), SB28, tripod
Film: Fuji Sensia 100
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered, fill flash @ -1.7
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 50% of frame

Commentary: Although not a great image, this photo at least records this rare species here in Arizona. Most sapsuckers found in the lower elevations of AZ are Red-naped, but a few Yellow-bellied show up most winters. Adults are difficult to separate, but Red-naped juveniles acquire adult plumage by fall. So, any sapsucker seen in AZ at this time of year still showing juvenile plumage is a Yellow-bellied.
