Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch |

Subject: Northern Saw Whet Owl (Aegolius
acadicus)
Place: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, AZ, USA
Date: February 1995
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor EDIF 400/5.6, tripod
Film: Fujichrome Sensia 100
Exposure: aperture priority center-weighted meter
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 90% of frame
Commentary: I've seen many saw-whets in New Jersey, where they
often winter in the same places. But this is the only one I've seen
in AZ, and I like that it is in an orange tree with fruit showing -
something that would never happen in NJ. Yes, there is a lot of flare
in the image, but this was the only angle that gave a clear view of
the bird. Daytime shot; no flash which I never use on roosting
owls.
