Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)
Place: Phoenix, AZ, USA
Date: October 2003
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (= 600/5.6), tripod, SB28
Film: Fuji Sensia 100
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered, fill flash @ -1.7
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 90% of frame

Commentary: Yet another female Ring-necked Duck from a local park where they tolerate lots of visitors. Such images are very easy to generate once a suitable location is found where the birds are used to visitors, unlike my more typical subjects that are cautious and involve a lot of habitat to deal with in the composition. In these duck images, it is mostly a matter of taking lots of frames as the birds move through the water and changing reflections from the surrounding vegetation.
