Subject: Black Rosy-Finch (Leucosticte
atrata)
Place: Page, AZ, USA
Date: January 25, 1997
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor 400/5.6 EDIF and TC14 (560/8
equivalent)
Film: Fujichrome Sensia
Exposure: Aperture priority center-weighted meter
Commentary: A bird of high elevations, usually seen on along
the edges of receding snow cover. This flock became a major draw for
birders in Arizona when it discovered a few miles south of Page near
the Utah border. Birders who made the long trip north from Phoenix or
Tucson brought along a bag of birdseed to scatter in this general
area, hoping the keep the wandering flock returning to this same spot
so later visitors could see them. Even with the seed present, the
flock would make quick hit-and-run visits and birders needed to wait
patiently in hopes of getting a glimpse.
