Commentary: Kittiwakes are birds of the ocean, seldom seen from shore or on beaches except in stormy weather or when nesting. This was a very surprising bird to hear about so far inland and in the deserts of central Arizona, and we went to see it as soon as we received the report. The bird had been discovered earlier in the day at a small pond on a golf course.
