Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)
Place: Desert Botanical Gardens, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Date: February 1995
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor EDIF 400/5.6, 25 mm extension tube, tripod
Film: Fujichrome Sensia 100
Exposure: Aperture priority center-weighted meter, natural light, no flash fill
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 80% of frame

Commentary: A common bird of the AZ desert, photographed at a popular garden in the parking lot. Although many might use fill flash to open up the shadow in the foreground side of the Verdin, I personally like the three dimensional feel of the backlight that makes the head look so round and pulls the eye to the yellow color of the face.
