Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus)
Place: Paloma Ranch, Gila Bend, AZ, USA
Date: November 1994
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor EDIF 400/5.6, hand held
Film: Sensia 400
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered, natural light, no fill
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 70% of image - edges cropped

Commentary: This was taken as a target of opportunity as I walked about a very small orchard searching for a reported rarity. I was very surprised to be able to get close enough to this accipiter for this shot with only 400 mm. Sensia 400 was used to allow hand holding. A compact and lightweight lens such as a 400/5.6 or a 300/4 with a 1.4x converter allows mobility and can lead to unexpected but excellent photo opportunities.
