Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus)
Place: Water Ranch, Gilbert, AZ, USA
Date: October 2002
Equipment: Nikon N90S, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (= 600/5.6), tripod
Film: Fuji Sensia 100
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 70% of frame

Commentary: Since I don't lure hawks into camera range with a plastic owl on a post or work near a nest, I'm forced to rely on dumb luck and hope that a bird will fly close enough to where I happen to be. This harrier made a low enough pass while I was walking trails at this wastewater facility for me to get a couple of decent frames. Auto focus helps, as does the trustworthy meter in my Nikon camera (no exposure compensation mumbo jumbo required to take up more time than the passing bird allows).
