Birds in Nature - images of wild birds by Richard Ditch

Subject: Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus)
Place: Atlantic Ocean, coastal NJ, USA
Date: January 1993
Equipment: Nikon 8008, Nikkor 75-300/5.6 AF
Film: Fujichrome 100 exposed normally
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered
Scan: Minolta Dimage; 85% of frame

Commentary: Away from their northern maritime nesting territories, the best time and place to see Northern Gannets is along the coast in winter. They seldom come close enough to shore here for photos, so it is better to go out on a pelagic to get close to them. An auto focus medium range zoom is very convenient to handle composition as the birds can make close approaches to the boat.
