Subject: Hermit Thrush (Catharus
guttatus)
Place: Phoenix, AZ, USA
Date: October 2001
Equipment: Nikon N90S & Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (=
600/5.6), tripod
Film: Fuji Provia 100 F
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered, natural light, no fill
flash
Scan: Minolta Dimage, 80% of frame
Commentary: Here's another back yard shot, this time a Hermit
Thrush, and only the second time we've had one in our yard. This one
stayed around for a couple of hours before continuing its southward
migration, and I took about 30 frames to verify my identification.
Since moving to Arizona I've learned that Catharus thrushes are a lot
harder to separate visually here in the western US than I was used to
back east. Until this bird got into better light and showed the
reddish color of the tail I wasn't sure if it was a Hermit or a
Swainson's. Unlike most of my backyard photos, this was taken from
the patio and not through the glass door.
