Commentary: Coots are the most abundant water bird in Arizona, and can be found on almost any body of water. This bird was fairly easy to approach at an artificial lake in an industrial park. I'm still having trouble scanning to keep detail in both the highlights and shadows, and I've lost all detail in the white bill.

Although coots share habitat with ducks, they are actually in the rail family and only distantly related to ducks.
