April 30, 2001 Day 38, 287 hours The door is attached temporarily to assist in fitting the strake (wing root) skins to the fuselage. Notice that on this design the door opens all the way to the bottom. You don't have to climb up on the wing to get in, as is the case with most light aircraft.

May 1, 2001 Day 39, 295 hours In this picture, the wing (constructed separately) has been attached to adjust the fit between the spar, the wing and the strake skins. The alignment of the wings is (obviously) critical.

May 3, 2001 Day 41, 313.5 hours This section of the wing is called the strake. It becomes the fuel tank. Also, the main wheels retract into this part of the wing. |

May 11, 2001 Day 48, 370 hours This structure is where the wheel and landing gear retract into the wing. It is a very tricky assortment of compound curves that all have to fit together and match the top skin to be installed later. The lines drawn on the lower skin mark the future position of the internal fuel tank baffles.
