Naked on Main Street was published in 1969 by Greenleaf Classics. It was printed with a woodblock design on
the cover of a naked youth prancing by a street lamp. The story involves a hitch-hiker from Columbus, Ohio, who lands in a
small California town named Pleasant Valley.
From the back cover and page 2:
It was my balls that got me into the whole mess, I think; either my balls or the fact that there are too many up-tight
people in this world. The letter read Sodom and Gomarrah and pervert, and something about queer,
and I know what you do behind closed doors, and then went on to the effect that I should have my balls cut off -
snick! -- for being such a goddamned offense to the people of the town, and so on and so on. Well, if I'm an offense to others
that's their problem, not mine, and I certainly intend to hang onto my balls as long as people will let me.
I didn't know about the letter that first day, of course, but I was thinking about my balls.
They itched.
Both of them. Frantically.
Especially the right one.
Maybe it was the last day, depending on how you slice it. The end of something. No, the first. My first day in California.
