I don't know if you want any sea stories, but I noticed a lack of them from the crew in our era.
Some I remember are the bridge telling maneuvering to do something about the smoke on No. two engine. After about two
minutes, the engine shut down. The OOD told maneuvering to find out why the engine shut down. Maneuvering told them they
had told the engine room to do something, but they didn't tell him what to do, so Bill Bennet did something, he shut
it down and the smoke quit. And Doc Oaks telling all the bar girls in Subic bay that there was a free picnic the next
day at a certain location. The next day they were all there and no Doc and no picnic. Doc was in a bar having a drink. And
there was Bennet's book of how to speak Japanese fluently. A yen bill on one side and the translation on the other. And the
selling of cigarettes by the crew to Australians, who were stopped by the cops and the cigarettes returned only to be sold
again. Lewallen and a bunch complaining topside, because we didn't make the movie, On the beach, but they used a limey boat.
A reporter on the pier heard and it made the front page about the U.S. Sailors were mad. Stanley Cramer sent over an apology.
Poor reporter didn't know that boat sailors complain about everything, and it meant nothing. And in case anyone forgot,
the address of the party was Thirty Robb Street. Then the sheilas bringing their carpet bags with them and staying on
board in the after battery. I think everybody knows how I got the nickname mullet.
