Here is a couple of sea stories I have been intending on sending you.
One
I thought was kinda funny and the other could have been quite serious. On a westpac cruise ENC Percy (hosenose) Williams
broke his left foot and it was put in a cast in port (I don't remember where) and stayed on board. While at sea he and I were
inventorying spare parts in the pump room.
He was sitting next to the air compressors listing the parts and I was on the
ladder taking the parts out of the locker to read him the part number. We were on the surface and the sea was a little rough.
The boat took a small roll and I dropped a pump head and at the same time hollered to Hose-nose .
He then pulled his broken
foot in and stuck out his good foot and the damn pump head fell right on the good foot and broke it. Hose-nose just stood
on his broken foot and yelled then stuck his big toe in his mouth and jumped up and down. We had to transfer him at sea to
a ship to take care of him. The joke around the Segundo was that I dropped the pump head on him just to get
his job.
The serious event happened while we were training off San Diego with a Destroyer.
The Destroyer was testing some kind of new sonar dome that hung on a cable and was towed by the Destroyer. We were supposed
to be making a torpedo run on the Destroyer (I think) but the Destroyer turned and started bearing down on us. We were at
periscope depth at the time. The C. O. shouted to take her down and we went down as fast as we could but the dome that was
towed by the Destroyer hit us in the shears just tearing the hell out of them. We had to go to the shipyard for repairs. No
one was hurt but it could have been a pretty big disaster for us. I don't remember if you were on board
at the time but
some of the shipmates will remember.
