From  Bobby W Lawson

Here goes,  I can't think of anything worth printing unless it
would be the VDS incident.  My mind is kinda shaky but this is the way I remember it.
We were on ASW ops working with the USS Blue.  We  went thru the entire morning or day without incident.  The Blue making dummy runs on us of course with us trying our dead level best
to stay hidden.  Finally on the very last part of the last run our old man announced over the UQC, finex! The Blue concurred, Finex!.
We realeased a flare from tubes forward and Blue said over the UQC,  Sighted flare, all clear to surface.  We came to periscope depth, looked around, spotted the Blue sitting there watching for us.  As we commenced our surfacing routine, Blue decided to make a  final run.
The Blue passed over us lickedy split but the VDS did  not.  It hit with a resounding thud and the ripping and tearing  sound of copius metals.  The old man was standing beside Number one
scope holding onto the hydraulic ram on one side and I was holding  onto the other ram.  After the initial shake, the skipper looked  over and said,  Lawson, I think we've been hit! Continued to surface and when I went to the bridge I discovered we really had  been hit.
Somehow or another CSF 1 staff tried to keep this from  the wives but in spite of their efforts if you remember, TV got hold  of it and of course there was hell to pay.  I think McConeghy was
skipper.
After we got home I found out the whole neighboorhood knew
about it and they all thought we were big heroes.  I think I went
 out and had a beer.
