When we were on a Westpac trip in about 61-62 leaving Pearl and going to Australia the Captain, two
lookouts and I were on the bridge. Richard Everett Hume lll came up to take the bridge. The captain gave him all of the
information about heading, engines, contacts. The Captain pointed out there was a light barely visible dead ahead on the horizon
and that he should keep close watch on it and when he lost sight of it let him know. The Captain left the bridge to the conning
tower for a brief pause and then to his quarters. Mr. Hume on the 7MC asked the radar operator the range to the contact
dead ahead. There was a brief pause and the operator reported "the range to that contact was 10,000 light years away. It's
a star sir."
