Using the Maps

maps: Acrobat

To help you follow along with my adventures, most chapters include maps. These are indicated by icons displayed to the right of the chapter title, as shown above. You can download maps in either Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat format, or view maps online from Microsoft TerraServer. To access these maps, click on the appropriate icon at the beginning of each chapter.

Click the Microsoft Word icon to download and view maps saved in Microsoft Word format. You must have Microsoft Word to view these maps. Maps will be displayed in a separate window, so you may switch between maps and the text. These maps are annotated with car to denote the start and end points of the trip, and campsite to denote campsites. Important peaks and passes are outlined with a red border. If you wish, you can save these maps on your computer for easier viewing later without having to download them again.

Click the Adobe Acrobat icon to download and view maps saved in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. These maps are identical to the Microsoft Word maps above, but are larger file sizes so downloads will take longer. You should choose this format if you do not have Microsoft Word. To download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Viewer (free), click Get Adobe Acrobat .

Click the TerraServerUSA icon to view topographic maps and aerial photos at terraserver.microsoft.com. These maps are not annotated, but are interactive. You can zoom and pan, as well as switch between map and photo. Once you get a general idea of the area using either of the first two map options, you may wish to explore further on this site.
