The information provided on this page is to help you find a healthy, quality Havanese puppy. Please read this.

I decided to write this because of all the Puppy mills and unscrupulous breeders popping up with Havanese. It's important that you are informed so you that you don't make a mistake in buying a puppy that will either drain your bank account because it's unhealthy or drain you and your family emotionally because the puppy dies an untimely death. Those breeders don't care about the life of the dogs and puppies only the cash in their pockets. They breed unhealthy or poor quality animals that produce puppies with devastating effects. Some with crooked legs that need surgery, if it's repairable. Some with organ defects like heart, kidney or liver problems that may not even live out the first year of their life. Some breeders are offering Tiny or Teacup or Extra Tiny Havanese, well, don't be fooled. Steer clear of these breeders they are amongst the worst of the breeders.  Also, breeders selling mixed breed or what they are calling "designer" puppies, steer clear.  If you want a mixed breed why pay high dollar for one? Visit your local animal shelter and save a life.  Those selling mixed breeds are not breeding for quality or health and many times you end up with the worst traits of both breeds.  You wont know what you will get.  People like Havanese because of their wonderful personalities and coats.  Why mess with perfection? Normally these breeders were only able to obtain limted registration (meaning they were not sold breeding rights) so they just register the dog with one of those false registries then get any kind of female they can and start breeding "designer" dogs.  I still dont understand why some people havnt wised up to this scam.

Don't take my word for any of the statements I make here. Please take them and ask your Vet, check online etc...DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Buying a puppy is an exciting and fun time but it's important that you do your homework and know what to look for in a breeder and a puppy.  There are many places on the internet you go to get information about the breed and breeders.  I think it's important to do your own homework and make an educated decision yourself.  Listen to everyone then check it out and make your own mind up.

Before you even visit the puppy or think about buying it you should make sure it's a reputable breeder and quality puppy. To do this there are some guidelines to fallow that will help you.

First, make sure the puppies are AKC (American Kennel Club) registered. This ensures you are getting a purebred Havanese. But dont be mistaken you still have to be careful.  There are a lot of dog registries that will give you papers and don't care if it's really a purebred or not.

Second, make sure the parents are health screened.  Eyes, hearts, hips, patellas should all be cleared. Some breeders go the extra step and pay to register the results with OFA and the results can be viewed online but if not you can check with their Vet to find out the same information. However, it is important to make sure this is done by a licensed, respected Vet.

Thrid, if they have a lot of dogs or a lot of puppies or puppies all the time or more than two breeds, this should be a warning. There is no way to properly care for all those dogs and give the puppy's proper socialization in an environment like that. You don't want to end up with a neurotic or unhealthy puppy and support back yard breeders and puppymills to continue the sufferage of the parents by buying one of their puppies.

Fourth, When your ready to place your deposit visit the home if you can.  If that is not possible try to figure out another alternative like paying someone from a local vet's office to visit and check things out for you.   It's a small price to pay in consideration of the cost of your puppy now and in the long run.  Sometimes breeders wont allow you over at certain times like when the breeding cycle is going on or new puppies are born.  Dont let this deter you.  They are just looking out for the best interest of their dogs and puppies.  Just arrange the visit for another time or ask for references and contact them.

Lastly but certainly not least:
Don't buy any puppies from pet stores. Regardless of what they tell you, all those puppies come from brokers who purchased from Puppy mills and unscrupulous breeders which is exactly what you want to avoid. Those puppies are not properly socialized, the parents arent health screened, and the puppies generally are not healthy. The dogs they breed are kept in horrible conditions. No love or attention and live out their sad lives in cages, then when they are no longer able to breed are put to sleep. Often times even drowned along with puppies they cant sell.  Everytime someone buys from a pet store or puppy mill they are giving those discusting people a reason to continue abusing these defenseless animals. Some pet stores will tell you they get their puppies from small breeders and not puppymills. Don't let them fool you. They are all coming from puppymills and unscruplious breeders! Sure they come with registration papers even AKC sometimes but those breeders on those registries can be tracked back to puppymillers.

Note: if the breeder is offended by any of your questions or requests then don't do business with them, they may be hiding something or at the very least is this the kind of person you want to have as your breeder and have to deal with?

I hope this info helps you along your search
