Peter Clayton

Peter was a fascinating person who fought in major campaigns in tthe Pennsylvania 10th Regiment during the Revolutionary War.

Is he one of us?

Peter Clayton was born in 1764 (as he testified at pension hearing) or perhaps in Ireland in 1750 (from the Wells Family Biography in 1912).

Peter appears in our family history in a notation entered by a grandchild (Erna Murray Russell) of   R. W. Clayton into his Bible.   The citation reads:

"Grandfather Robert W. Clayton nephew of Robert and Abigale Wells who were parents of thirteen children ..."

In fact, Abigail Clayton Wells had a brother named John of appropriate age. But, as you will see below, his spouse and progeny are quite different from those of our John Clayton, m. 1822 to Maria Blanchard. Three of John and Maria's four children were born between 1822 and 1832. Their son Robert Wallace (1832-1925) is the head of the Warren and Saratoga branches of our family.

Importance of Peter Clayton Story

Our family legend says that John Clayton, is the son of Farmer and Mehitable Miller Clayton, and grandson of Jonathan and Susanna Watkins of Worcester Co. MA and Windham Co, VT.

We know that a John Clayton married (1822) Maria Blanchard in Schenectady County, NY.   Three of John and Maria's four children were born between 1822 and 1832. The fourth, Mary, was adopted by a Potter Family in Albany, and died young. We do not know her birth date.

Because there is no record of John Clayton having served in the Mexican War, nor any clear evidence of his presance in Montgomery County, NY, the possibility exists that the war story was simply a face-saving means to cover a divorce or desertion. After studies of the available census records, I have seen no Clayton in Townshend who has a family member distribution like "our" John's.

The problem is further aggrevated by lack of marriage or birth records for Farmer and his progeny in the State of Vermont.. We know only that Mehitable, with Farmer's children, was in Windsor Vt. in 1813.

The John Clayton who married Polly Ann could conceivably be the same John who earlier married Maria Blanchard.   Polly Ann's first child was born in 1836, four years after the birth of Maria's last recorded child.

As far-fetched as this story seems, it requires more digging.
