2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1957, Harry
Belafonte signs a million-dollar contract with RCA on the heels of
hits such as "Banana Boat"...four years to the week later in 1961,
Belafonte shells out $50 to a young Bob Dylan for harp accompaniment
on his "Calypso King" album...1965, The Kinks embark on their first
U.K. tour...1968, the Beatles decline to perform for Queen Elizabeth
at a British Olympic Appeal Fund show...Ringo explains, "Our decision
would be the same no matter what the cause. We don't do benefits."...
1970, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane receives an invitation to a
White House party from Tricky D's daughter, Tricia Nixon...Slick
brings activist Abbie Hoffman as her escort and is refused admittance
thwarting the singer's announced plan to introduce the young Ms.
Nixon to LSD-laced tea...1975, during a five-show L.A. concert series
by Pink Floyd, 511 fans are arrested, mostly for pot posession...in a
speech given to the Rotary Club in the midst of the concerts, L.A.
Police Chief Ed Davis says, "Tonight at the Sports Center they have a
dope festival. It's called a rock concert or something."...1976,
David Bowie is detained at the Polish-Russian frontier while customs
officials confiscate Nazi memorabilia from his luggage...Bowie claims
the material is part of his research for a film about Nazi
propagandist Joseph Goebbels...this same week in 1992, Bowie marries
model Iman in a secret Swiss ceremony...during a 1977 concert at the
Saginaw Civic Center, Elvis cuts what prove to be his final
recordings...three songs from the concert, heavily overdubbed, turn
up on the posthumously-released album "Moody Blue"...1984, Jerry Lee
Lewis weds wife number-six, 22-year-old Kerrie McCarver...1987, Ozzy
Osbourne buys three rounds of drinks and belts out "Crazy Train" over
the P.A. on a Miami-Boston flight loaded with students returning from
spring break festivities...1990, Guns 'n' Roses axeman Axl Rose
marries Erin Everly, daughter of Don Everly...lasting three weeks,
the marriage runs just a bit longer than a Rose solo...also in '90,
the Strat® played by Hendrix at Woodstock is sold at auction in
London for a then-record $295,000...1992, in the midst of rioting
following the Rodney King conviction, Madonna's bustier is stolen
from Frederick's of Hollywood...the store offers a $1,000 reward for
its return...1999, funk musician Roger Troutman, 47, dies following a
shooting...his brother and partner in Zapp and Roger, Larry Troutman,
54, is found shot in a car nearby, an apparent suicide...also in '99,
Sinead O'Connor is ordained as a priest in the Latin Tridentine
Church, a Roman Catholic offshoot...the singer reveals that she has
already celebrated mass four times, and following a six-week
training, she will assume her church duties as Mother Bernadette Mary
...also in '99, Marilyn Manson ends his show prematurely and walks
off stage upon realizing someone has plastered a stage prop with a
large yellow smiley face...a ruckus ensues in which 23 are arrested
...and finally in '99, Columbine High School shooting victim Lance
Kirklin is visited in the hospital by the five members of Aerosmith
before their show in Denver that evening where the band dedicates
"Living On The Edge" to the injured student...and that was the week
that was.

Hal Leonard Beatles Collection
Mf Presents Everything For The Beatlemaniac Musician
By Skip Coates
I have been accused of being a Beatles fanatic, but that's really a
load of baloney. It's not like I was one of those yoyos playing "I Am
the Walrus" backward to get secret messages about the death of Paul.
And I was only seven at the time, a very susceptible age. (OK, I'll
admit the reason was I wouldn't-absolutely COULDN'T-accept the idea
that he was gone.) But the earliest tune I can remember is "I Want To
Hold Your Hand" played on the school bus driver's transistor radio.
I guess you could say I imprinted on that song and consequently all
things Beatle...

The Fender® American Series:
The Evolution Of A Venerable Icon In Popular Music
Think of them not as just another Strat® or Tele®, but as the
evolution of an icon. From the beginning, Fender® has continuously
refined and improved its instruments based on players' input and a
changing musical landscape. When the Strat® first burst on the scene
in 1954, it had a clearly defined set of specs. But by 1965 many of
these specs had changed - body wood, neck shape, fingerboard
material, pickguard, pickups, headstock graphics, etc. had all
undergone change. All in pursuit of a better quality...
