2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1955, Fats Domino's
"Ain't That a Shame" is released...1956, Elvis Presley, along with
Bill Black and Scotty Moore, debuts in Las Vegas at the New Frontier
Hotel...the two-week run is cancelled after one week because of a
poor reception...1957, Buddy Knox, known for his hit "Party Doll"
enters the army for a tour of duty...his Roulette Records A&R team
cut over 20 songs to keep his career on track but it stalls anyway
..1959, the last of the Alan Freed rock movies "Go, Johnny, Go" is
released...it includes performances by The Flamingos, The Cadillacs,
Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Ritchie Valens, and Jackie Wilson...1968,
Deep Purple plays its debut concert in Denmark and The L.A. Free
Festival ends before it begins when the crowd gets unruly...1969,
The Who give their first live performance of "Tommy"...Janis Joplin
and the Kozmic Blues Band play London's Royal Albert Hall...and John
Lennon changes his middle name from Winston to Ono, establishing
himself as one of the most whipped guys on the planet...1970, Paul
McCartney releases his first solo album...1976, The Rolling Stones'
"Black and Blue" album is released under feminist protest, due to an
ad campaign which features a photograph of a bound and bruised model
..nevertheless, it goes platinum in two months...1978, Bob Marley
and the Wailers perform at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica, his
first in Jamaica since being wounded in an assassination attempt a
year and a half earlier...also in 1978, over 40 rock-and-roll
performers petition President Jimmy Carter to end America's use of
nuclear power...these include Jackson Browne, the Doobie Brothers,
Tom Petty, Carly Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and James Taylor among
others...1980, Bob Marley and the Wailers perform as guests of state
at Zimbabwe's Independence Festival...1981, former Papa John Phillips
goes to jail for a drug conviction...he does 30 days of his five-year
sentence, then is released in exchange for 250 hours of community
service...1988, Sonny Bono is inaugurated as the mayor of Palm
Springs and the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland is
inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame...1992, Wynonna Judd
launches her solo career with a new album "Wynonna," her last name
dropped to distance herself from her mother and longtime duo partner
..and that was the week that was.

Recording Tech Tips - Drum Miking Overview
By Dennis Kambury
Miking any individual instrument is a study in balance - technique,
gear, and ear must all harmonize to create the sound in the
producer's head. Miking drums can take this concept to extremes,
giving an enormous amount of control (and responsibility) to the
engineer. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll examine some of the
methods used to record drums and percussion. In this installment
we'll introduce basic techniques used to record drum sets...

LP® Latin Percussion Instruments
Rhythm done right.
I'm sure you have heard the age-old adage that says "if you want
something done right, you have to do it yourself." It rings no truer
than the story behind Latin Percussion, Inc. and its founder, Martin
Cohen. Cohen created LP with, in his own words, "a vision to provide
authentic, high-quality instruments to players everywhere." Nearly
four decades later, Cohen's vision is still a reality that's evident
in LP's top-quality congas, bongos, timbales, and other percussion
instruments.

Mackie Get Active!
Mackie's SRM450, SRS1500, SR1530 PA Speakers
The sound reinforcement arena is in the midst of a love affair with
powered speakers. A bunch of manufacturers have jumped on that
bandwagon by slapping power amps into their cabs and proudly
announcing their new powered speaker lines. But it's important to
understand the distinctions between those powered speakers and the
type of true active speaker technology that goes into Mackie's
systems.
