2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1956, while
performing in Birmingham, Alabama, Nat King Cole is beaten by a group
of white racists upset over his mixed-race backup band...
paradoxically, Cole's nationally televised variety show debuts later
that same year...1959, the BBC bans the Coasters' song "Charlie
Brown" due to the inclusion of the word "spitball"...1960, RCA
announces it will release all singles in mono and stereo...Elvis'
"Stuck On You" is the first dual-format release...1963, The Chiffons'
"He's So Fine" is #1 on the singles chart...in 1976 the estate of the
song's writer, Ronnie Mack, wins a judgment against George Harrison
when a judge finds the ex-Beatle subconsciously copied the tune in
writing his "My Sweet Lord"...1964, The Beatles forge chart history
when they command the first five Billboard singles positions with
"Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout," "She Loves You," "I Want to
Hold Your Hand," and "Please Please Me"...1965, Bruce Johnston
replaces Glen Campbell in the Beach Boys...Campbell had filled in on
tour for Brian Wilson who suffered a mental breakdown....1968, James
Brown makes a nationally broadcast plea on TV for calm following the
assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King...also in '68, Pink
Floyd announces that founding member Syd Barrett has departed the
band due to psychiatric problems complicated by drug use...1969, Jim
Morrison is snatched by the FBI on a charge of interstate flight in
the wake of a Miami concert in which the Doors vocalist is accused of
obscenity...This is an active week in the annals of musical suicides
...in '76 folkie Phil Ochs hangs himself...in '83, Danny Rapp of
Danny and the Juniors shoots himself as does Kurt Cobain in '94, and
on April 7, 1998, both Wendy O. Willliams, chainsaw-toting Plasmatics
singer, and Carlos Vega, James Taylor's drummer, also succumb to self
-inflicted gunshots...1977, The Damned play CBGB's in N.Y. marking
the first U.S. appearance by a U.K. punk band...1985, roughly 5,000
radio stations around the world simultaneously air the song "We Are
The World"...1990, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee falls from
scaffolding supporting his elevated drumkit and experiences a mild
concussion...1995, police confiscate a loaded pistol from Eddie Van
Halen's carry-on luggage...no charges ensue...1996, M.C. Hammer files
for bankruptcy...Soundgarden announces it is amicably disbanding...
1998, Michael Jackson is awarded $2.7 million damages for defamation
by Victor Gutierrrez who claimed on the TV show "Hard Copy" that he
had seen a video of Jackson engaged in sex with a boy...also in 1998,
27 country performers including Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Vince
Gill, and Faith Hill bring suit against Jim Salmon of L.A. who has
registered their names as website domains...in other country-related
litigation, a $50 million dollar suit is brought in 1999 by the
children of the late Tammy Wynette charging that the singer's death
was the result of negligence by her doctor and husband...also in '99,
Tipper Gore, wife of the V.P. and presidential candidate, jams on
congas with former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart...
2000, former Doors Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger play the Whiskey
in L.A....Manzarek fondly recalls his old band's gigs there decades
earlier...and that was the week that was.

Roland - An Introduction to Hard Disk Recording
Part Eight: Other Advantages of HD Recording, Conclusion.
Presented by the Roland Corporation
Some HDRs include the option of Time Compression. Since the
information on an HDR is stored as numbers (binary info just like a
computer), it's possible to process these numbers several ways. One
way is to change the length of something without changing the
pitch...

The Washburn DIME2ST and Randall's Warhead Combo:
Top-gun weaponry in the war against silence.
I write here to cheer the unholy alliance of Washburn, Randall, and
Dimebag Darrell. Over the years, these three have produced a number
of killer guitars and monster amps for taking music to the very edge.
But their latest creations are the best yet, especially for us
ordinary mortals who don't play the big gigs...

A very cool piece just got way more affordable
By Moogie Willis
The Pro-Scratch 1 has been tearing up the DJ scene for about a year
now. Growing popularity with DJs in general and nods of approval from
top-name scratch gods have established it among the coolest devices
out there. It was the first compact CD player to combine looping,
effects, sampling functions, and the capability to emulate turntables
realistically...
