This is the week that was in matters musical...1926, The Savoy
Ballroom opens in Harlem and becomes home to luminary jazz bands and
dance crazes...1948, struggling Memphis radio station WDIA is the
first outlet to adopt an all-black music format...in later years
Rufus Thomas and B.B. King are DJs there...1956, Colonel Tom Parker
is officially named as Elvis' manager...years later, following
Presley's death, it's revealed Parker is actually a Dutch national
born Andreas van Kujiic who illegally entered the U.S. and assumed
the name of his commanding officer in the army...the promoter had
previously done publicity for circuses and run numerous scams as the
elected dogcatcher of Tampa, Florida...1958, Big Records releases
"Our Song" by a Queens, N.Y., teen duo billed as Tom and Jerry...the
single stiffs, but the boys go on to bigger things renamed Simon and
Garfunkel...1959, "American Bandstand" viewers name Fabian "Most
Promising New Talent"...1960, Sam Cooke launches his first tour of
the Caribbean with a concert in Montego Bay, Jamaica...the tour sets
attendance records everywhere it plays...1963, the first Monterey
Folk Festival lineup includes Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger,
Peter, Paul & Mary, and The Weavers...1965, Eric Clapton leaves The
Yardbirds discouraged by the band's movement towards rock and away
from its blues roots...16 years to the week later in 1981, Slow Hand
is hospitalized for bleeding ulcers...1967, The Beatles' "Penny Lane"
goes to #1 on the charts...the song was to have been included on
"Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" but is instead released
as a single...1970, Country Joe McDonald is fined $350 following a
Massachusetts concert in which he caps his band's "Fish Cheer" with
the "F" word...1968, the Vatican issues an edict okaying the use of
rock during masses...1971, Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" goes
to #1 six months after the singer's death...also in '71, the Rolling
Stones play two farewell shows at the Chalk Farm Roundhouse in London
before moving to the South of France as tax exiles...1972, L.A. radio
station KHJ plays Donny Osmond's "Puppy Love" for 90 minutes non-stop
prompting calls to the police by listeners fearing the station has
been taken over by Osmond fanatics...police raid the studios only to
find that DJ Robert W. Morgan is just getting a bit obsessive and
leave without making any arrests...an even lengthier marathon occurs
in 1979 when Bill Tinley of WATN in Watertown, N.Y., broadcasts for
336 continuous hours...1974,the former Jefferson Airplane goes on
tour as the newly-named Jefferson Starship...also in '74, the Grand
Ole Opry relocates from the old Ryman Auditorium to the Opryland
entertainment complex...performers appreciate the spiffy backstage
facilities but miss the down-home feel of the old venue...1977, A&M
Records has second thoughts about their week-old signing of the Sex
Pistols and drops the punk band with a payoff of £40,000...1978,
after uttering a racial slur concerning Ray Charles, Elvis Costello
gets into it with Bonnie Bramlett...the bespectacled new waver later
apologizes at a press conference...1980, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" goes
platinum...1983, The Hell's Angels convene a press conference to
quash allegations they have put out a hit on Mick Jagger...1984,
notching 30 million copies sold, Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
eclipses Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" as the biggest-selling disc
ever...1994, Kurt Cobain locks himself in a bedroom with his gun
collection and threatens suicide...police dissuade him...the same
week a year later, teenager Ryan O'Donnell files a battery complaint
against Mrs. Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, saying the musician punched
him after she dove into the audience at a concert...also in '95, the
"world's biggest pajama party" is hosted by Madonna when 1,500 guests
convene in PJs and teddies to celebrate the premiere of the singer's
"Bedtime Stories" video...and in the same week, dozens of fans go to
hospital during a Pearl Jam concert in Melbourne that draws 35,000
to a venue that seats 13,000...1996, a riot erupts in Buenos Aires
when angry fans discover that a Ramones concert for which they've
qeued up overnight is sold out...1998, Ray Charles makes his first
solo appearance in 53 years on the QVC shopping channel pitching his
CD and book set...also in '98, the ponderously-titled "Nokia Presents
The George Strait Chevy Truck Country Music Festival Brought To You
By Wrangler" opens in Phoenix to a sellout crowd...also in '99,
Michael Jackson goes on a shopping spree in Munich disguised as an
Arab woman in an attempt to dodge fans...Bruce Springsteen and Billy
Joel pay tribute to their moms and Paul McCartney mourns the death of
wife Linda followed by a jam led by the three pop titans at the 1999
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony...and in that same
week, almost 25 years to the day after residing at the #1 slot with
Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe," Cher rides the top of the pops
once again with her single "Believe"...and that was the week that
was.
