2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1953, Rufus Thomas
signs to Sun Records and goes into the studio to record "Bear Cat,"
his reply to Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog"...1955, Carl Perkins "Blue
Suede Shoes" enters the pop chart - a first for any country artist...
1957, the Diamonds make their pop chart debut with the classic
"Little Darlin," which reaches #2 on the pop chart and #3 on the R&B
chart...1958, Billie Holiday is given a year's probation for
narcotics possession by a Philadelphia court...1961, The Supremes
release their first single, "I Want A Guy"...The Beatles make their
television debut on the BBC show "Teenager's Turn" performing Roy
Orbison's "Dream Baby"...1963, Patsy Cline's funeral is held...1964,
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" by The Beatles are
neck and neck for the top spot on the singles chart...1966, "Gloria"
by Chicago garage band The Shadow of Knights enters the top ten...
also in '66, a petition bearing 5,000 signatures is delivered to
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson asking that Liverpool's Cavern
Club be reopened...1968, Fillmore East opens in New York..."Sittin'
on the Dock of the Bay" earns Otis Redding his only gold record but
it comes too late for him to enjoy - three months after his death...
1969, The Who releases "Pinball Wizard" in the U.K., the first
selection the public hears from the rock opera "Tommy"...also in
1969, The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour is cancelled by CBS-TV
because the brothers refuse to censor Joan Baez's comments about her
husband who is going to jail for refusing the draft...and again in
this year of significant events, George Harrison and wife Patti are
arrested for cannabis possession when authorities find 120 joints in
their house...1970, Charlie Manson releases his cult album "The Lie"
while serving life in prison...1971, Radio Hanoi broadcasts Jimi
Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner"...the tape is sent by Abbie Hoffman
..1973, to the whole world's surprise "Dueling Banjos" performed by
Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel goes gold...also in 1973, the group
War receives its second gold record single in a week (for "Cisco Kid"
and "The World is a Ghetto") and Paul McCartney is fined for growing
marijuana...1976, Madame Tussaud's in London unveils a wax dummy of
Elton John, Fleetwood Mac releases "Rhiannon," and Keith Moon
collapses onstage at the Boston Garden...1978, The Bee Gees' "Night
Fever" moves into the #1 spot, displacing "Stayin' Alive," another
Bee Gees tune...1979, James Brown appears as a guest on the Grand Ole
Opry at the request of Porter Wagonner...regulars are pleased by
Opry-acceptable versions of "The Tennessee Waltz" and "Your Cheatin'
Heart," but Brown also tears through a five-song soul medley
(including "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag") that strains the budding
relationship... also in '79, John Lennon gets into it with a
photographer outside the Troubador in Los Angeles...1983, Danny Rapp
of Danny And The Juniors commits suicide in Arizona at age 41...1987,
Carol King is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame...1997, rap
star Notorious B.I.G. is shot to death in his car following a Soul
Train awards party...McCartney is knighted...1998, Liam Gallagher of
Oasis gets into two fracases in one week, first in Australia where he
breaks a fan's nose and is charged for assault, then on a flight from
Hong Kong where the boys in the band shout obscenities, smoke, and
have a row with the crew...and that is the week that was.

Roland - An Introduction to Hard Disk Recording
Part Four: What is Random Access?
Presented by the Roland Corporation
Unlike a tape-based system, HDRs don't make you fast forward
through all the verses and choruses to get from the beginning to the
end. Just jump there instantly. You can immediately jump to a
specific bar and beat, or time location in your song. In fact, some
HDRs allow you to have hundreds of markers so you can jump to any
location, instantly. This is another way that HDRs help your creative
process - speed. You don't have to wait to rewind to try a new solo
when your creative juices are really flowing...

TerraTec Soundcards
Stunning audio, right from your desktop!
Modern PCs are complex but very generalized devices. They're dandy
for surfing the Web, doing some word processing, sending email,
running a spreadsheet, or editing and storing pictures from Junior's
last birthday. Try doing some serious sound work with the average
consumer-configured computer and you'll quickly discover its
limitations. But with the right enhancements, your PC can become the
core of a home or project studio capable of producing pro-quality
recordings...

public. Most importantly, you want a set that plays with an ease and
expressiveness that brings out the best in your music. This is a tall
order, but there is an easy answer: Pearl Drums. For many years,
