2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1986, after a long,
productive career as keyboard player and singer for The Band, plus
gigs with such luminaries as Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson, Richard
Manuel hangs himself in a Quality Inn bathroom while his wife sleeps
in the next room...The Band (minus Robbie Robertson) has just
reunited and are on tour...Manuel is under the influence of cocaine
and alcohol when he dies...1963, country great Patsy Cline dies in a
small plane crash...1982, Blues Brother John Belushi meets the same
fate by a different means in an L.A. hotel room...1979, a passionate
fan at a Cure concert in Bournemouth, UK, pulls her boyfriend_s ear
off...1989, shock rocker G.G. Allin, veteran of such bands as Texas
Nazis, Cedar Street Sluts, Drug Whores, Sewer Scum, Afterbirth, AIDS
Brigade, Toilet Rockers, and Murder Junkies is arrested for
defecating on stage and hurling the result onto his adoring fans...
composer of such endearing works as "F---in' The Dog," "Needle Up My
C---," "Drink, Fight And F---," and "Expose Yourself To Kids," Allin
is known for carving himself up on stage, doing profane things with
microphones, and worse...though only sentenced to two months, he
winds up spending most of the next few years in jail as a result of
similar charges and repeated parole violations..."It's not this
individual or that one," says Allin, "I hate everybody"...1966,
London_s Evening Standard prints an article in which John Lennon is
quoted as saying, "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink.
I needn't argue about that. I'm right and I will be proved right.
We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first-
rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples
were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me"
..while the statements go unremarked in England, hordes of U.S.
fundamentalists freak out...1977, Canadian Mounties raid Keith
Richards_ hotel room in Toronto to find 22 grams of smack and 5 grams
of cocaine...he_s charged with possession and intent to traffic...
thanks partly to testimony by a young, blind fan who describes the
lengths to which Richards went to see that she got home safely from
a Stones concert, he gets off with a promise of a benefit show for
Canada_s National Institute for the Blind and is allowed to enter the
U.S. for drug treatment..."I never had a problem with drugs,"
Richards says later, "only with cops"...1966, the Cavern Club, steady
gig of the early Beatles, closes...already suffering cash flow
problems, club management is unable to fund a mandated health and
safety renovation...by July the efforts of avid supporters have the
club back on its feet...it is reopened with a speech from the prime
minister...1967, Pink Floyd records its first single, "Arnold Layne,"
which will soon top the U.K. charts...a year later, in 1968, Syd
Barrett-already battling his lifelong plight of mental illness-
leaves the band a few weeks after David Gilmour joins...1973, Pink
Floyd begins a 3-week tour of the U.S to promote Dark Side of the
Moon...this writer catches the show in Jacksonville, Florida, and has
his little mind blown...1966, Buffalo Springfield-a wellspring of
great talents-forms in L.A., taking their name from a steamroller
working on the street outside their apartment...1984, This is Spinal
Tap premieres...and that was the week that was.

Roland - An Introduction to Hard Disk Recording
Part Three: What is Pointer Based Editing?
Presented by the Roland Corporation
Pointer based editing is the key difference between any tape based
system (either analog or digital) and Hard Disk Recorders. Once you
have recorded something onto your hard disk, you never _touch_ that
material again. It stays there, ready for a command from the HDR to
play part or all of it. For example, if you record a vocal on tape,
and then decide to erase part, you are erasing your original recorded
material. It is gone forever! If you record a vocal on a pointer
based hard disk recorder and erase part of it, you aren_t erasing
the original material, you are just telling the HDR to play only
part of the original recording. You never actually erase the original
material! You can use an UNDO to get back to the original recording
if you decide that you like the original better...

Kustom Profile System One: One for the road!
By Bob Jackson
They say what goes around comes around, and that's the old saying I
found myself living recently when Musician's Friend sent me a Kustom
Profile System One PA system for review. You see, way (way) back in
the old days, I was a gigging musician, and my good friend Bob was
the soundman. He had invested most of his net worth in a beautiful
new Kustom 300, complete with spring reverb, feedback control, and 4'
tall speaker towers wrapped in glorious white metal flake
tuck-and-roll naugahyde upholstery...

Shure KSM Series Mics: Affordable solutions for high-end recording
By Brian Chapman
You know the old adage, _Great mic, great recording._ Well, it_s
not quite that simple. There_s a lot of otherequipment and technique
involved, but still, the right mic makes a huge difference. It is the
most critical piece of gear in the capture of sound_the interface
that determines what actually gets onto the tape or gets turned into
ones and zeros on the hard drive. Start with good music and a good
mic, and you have more than a fighting chance of coming up with a
quality final recording.
