2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________

This is the week that was in matters musical...1956, Cleveland
police enforce a 1931 law that prohibits public dancing by those
under 18 unless accompanied by parents...1957, Buddy Holly & The
Crickets record "That'll Be The Day" a hugely popular and influential
early rock hit...1958, the first Gibson Flying V hits the market and
it goes on to become a popular axe among rockers and blues musicians
..the '58 model remains among the most valuable and collectible
electric guitars ever...the first U.S. Beatles single, "Please Please
Me," is released this week in 1963 by the black-owned VeeJay label
after the majors pass on distribution rights to the Fab Four...1968,
Genesis releases their first single "The Silent Sun"...Tony Banks and
Peter Gabriel later say the song was written to emulate the Bee Gees,
a favorite of their manager-producer...1969, The Jimi Hendrix
Experience plays its last gig ever at Royal Albert Hall...1976,
former Supremes singer Florence Ballard dies of a heart attack at age
32 and is said to have been on welfare having fallen on hard times
following her Motown salad days...The Police, sporting dyed-blonde
hair, film a commercial for Wrigley's gum in 1978...the shoot occurs
before their first recordings...1982, Jaz Coleman and Geordie Walker
of the British band Killing Joke split from the group and move to
Iceland believing the world is about to end...at the 1989 Grammys,
Heavy Metal is included as a category for the first time...Metallica
performs at the show but Jethro Tull gets the award producing audible
booing from the audience...also in 1989, Cat Stevens, aka Yusuf
Islam, enters into the furor over Ayatolla Khomeini's death warrant
issued against author Salman Rushdie for his novel, "The Satanic
Verses," which is judged to be sacrilegious by the Iranian cleric...
Stevens says, "If someone defames the prophet, then he must die"...
1990, former lead tenor of The Coasters Cornell Gunter dies in a hail
of gunfire when an unknown assailant peppers his '78 Camaro at a Las
Vegas intersection...strangely, he is not the only Coaster to be
murdered in Lost Wages...Nate Wilson met his homicidal demise there a
decade earlier...1991, Quincy Jones goes home with six more Grammys
..he is the winningest Grammy  recipient of all time...former First
Lady Hillary Clinton nails a Grammy for her spoken-word "It Takes A
Village" at the '97 ceremonies...touring England in 1992, Pearl Jam's
bus is stopped by a youth gang which robs the band at knife point...
at the 1995 British Music Awards, Blur becomes the only band to win
four times...the Brit press reports the Blur boys amuse themselves at
the ceremony by tossing dinner rolls at Prince...1998, during
Carnival celebrations, nine fans are killed and another 40 are
injured in Port Au Prince, Haiti when a truck carrying the popular
band Ram goes out of control...the driver flees and is later arrested
..1999, Jimmy Chamberlin reunites with The Smashing Pumpkins after
being booted from the band three years before when he is implicated
in the OD death of keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin...exactly one
year earlier the Pumpkins are sued by their label, Virgin Records
America, for breach of contract and failure to deliver albums...also
in '99, former Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten emcees VH1's Grammy coverage
..and that was the week that was.

2b. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: Weekly Winner_____________________________

The winner of the Crate BV120H Amp Head and BV412S Cabinet is
Michael Kabatt of Silver Spring, MD.
Here is what he had to say:

"When I opened my email and saw that I had won "something," I was
floored.  Then I looked at the prize: "Crate BV120H Amp Head and
BV412S Cabinet!," I was then blown away.  I then had to call Lisa
Freitas (Web Content Coordinator) to make sure this was true.  She
assured me that it was.  I explained that I had never won anything
like this before and she laughed.  Thank you, Musician's Friend,
Inc."

2c. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: Tip Of The Week___________________________

Roland - An Introduction to Hard Disk Recording
Part Two:
presented by the Roland Corporation

What’s the Big Deal About Hard Disk Recording? Let’s answer this
question with an analogy: What’s the big difference between a
typewriter and a word processor? When you write something on a piece
of paper with a typewriter, it’s there to stay. If you want to change
the order of the words, add a paragraph in the middle of the page, or
correct a mistake, you are out of luck. You have to start all over
again. This is similar to analog or digital tape.

4c. ___MUSICIAN'S RESOURCES: Hands-on Product Review of the Week_____

Fender® Passport Deluxe PA Systems
By Milton Stirch

When Fender® first introduced its Passport P.A. Systems several
years back, the company knew it had a winner, but a lot of musicians
took a wait-and-see attitude. Sure, it was from Fender®. Sure, it was
compact, portable, simple to set up and use, but the real question
was, "How does it sound?" A system that would do nicely for a
business seminar wasn't necessarily one that would cut the mustard on
a gig. Small PAs usually sound small, so would the Passport be any
different...

Fender® Standard Basses
Fifty Years After And Still The Best Bass Buy
By Todd Ragland

All bass players hold a deep, abiding love for Fender®. The story
has been the same for nearly every player over the last 50 years. You
learned on something funky but affordable. Eventually  you graduated
to a Fender® the Precision® for some, the Jazz® for others. You fell
in love with your Fender the first time you played it. Now, with its
finish worn away by your thumb and your forearm through many years of
playing, you love it even more. It’s still your main squeeze. You may
have other basses you’ve collected over the years. There have been a
lot to choose from. But you still keep going back to your Fender,
because it’s the sweetest of all.
