2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________

This is the week that was in matters musical...1973, Carly Simon
gets the gold for the single "You're So Vain," a song which sets the
whole country to wondering exactly who is so insufferably vain...
candidates for the post include Carly's relatively recent famous
conquests Mick Jagger (who sang on the record), Cat Stevens, Kris
Kristofferson, and Warren Beatty...when asked if she's "gone with"
Beatty, she says, "Hasn't everybody?"..."I felt I was one among
thousands at that point--it hadn't reached, you know, the populations
of small countries"...but, despite anything you may have heard to the
contrary, Simon has never revealed who she had in mind when she wrote
that song...2000, Billy Joel plays "Captain Jack" at the kickoff
rally for Hillary's senate run, inspiring opponent New York City
mayor Giuliani to wax sanctimonious, claiming that the playing of the
song was evidence of Mrs. Clinton's moral turpitude...Giuliani avers
that the song encourages young people to use drugs and masturbate...
1977, Fleetwood Mac releases "Rumours," which spends 31 weeks at the
top of the U.S. albums chart...1972, London's Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, after recording the 200 Motels soundtrack with Frank Zappa
and The Mothers of Invention, cancels a scheduled live performance
with the Mothers at the Royal Albert Hall...at issue is a complaint
by various stuffy orchestra members that the band behaved in "an
unseemly fashion" during the making of the film...they don't want to
see the Albert Hall desecrated by such cretins...1979, "Sultans of
Swing" is released by Dire Straits...1969, Eric Clapton, Ginger
Baker, Steve Winwood, and Rick Grech form the supergroup Blind Faith,
which quickly dies of ego bloat...1964, the Beatles appear for the
first time on the Ed Sullivan show...on the same show is future
Monkee Davy Jones, who sings a song from the play "Oliver"...
according to the ratings, at 73 million it is the largest audience
ever to view a television show...1978, Van Halen's debut album is
released...it will end up selling over 6 million copies...1942, the
first-ever gold record goes to Glenn Miller for "Chattanooga
Choo-Choo"...since it will be another 16 years before official gold
records are introduced by the R.I.A.A., the award is probably
presented to him by his own record company, Bluebird/RCA Records...
the album "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel goes
gold this week in 1970, as does Sly and the Family Stone's single
"Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)"...1997, The Simpsons
becomes the longest-running prime-time animated series...over the
years, it has featured some of the most famous musicians in the
world, including Beatles Paul, George, and Ringo; The Who; Sting;
Michael Jackson; Johnny Cash; and dozens more...and that was the week
that was.

Crate GFX-50 TwoTone Guitar Amp
Two perfect amps in one powerful package

It's hard to believe this amp was originally designed for guitar
teachers. Sure, its dual inputs neatly accommodate both student and
teacher's electric guitars. But its power, amazing onboard effects,
and sound-shaping capabilities make it a perfect performance amp...

Ampeg BA Series Bass Combos
Ampeg sound and performance for an easy price

If you play bass, you have to have a big, warm spot in your heart
for Ampeg--especially if you've played for enough years to remember
the classic Ampegs. The Portaflex was one of the most unique combos
of all time. It had a look all its own, with a diamond pattern
covering and a fliptop lid that turned over to put the insides of
the amp in plain view so you could watch the tubes glow. But it was
the solid, funky sound that earned the Portaflex its place in the
bass gear hall of fame...
