At the North Central Animal Shelter: "Sumo" - a friendly dog,now abandoned and needing adoption.
5/4/02:  This dog is a pit bull or staffordshire terrier mix of some kind.  He appears to have been someone's pet and now has been dumped.  He was very responsive and warm to me.  The worker there said he was friendly since the time he arrived, and a good dog.

These dogs get a bad reputation from those irresponsible who condition them to be mean.  They are strong and muscular, but react to how they are trained and handled and respond to that.  With any dog, you don't leave little kids unattended with them.  How would you act if you got poked in the eye, your ear was pulled or other things that little kids tend to do because they are little kids?   (This is a matter of common sense, of which some people are in short supply.)

Although the photos don't show here, his ribs were showing and his mid-section was very skinny.  At the time of this photo, he had been in the shelter 2 days, and probably undernourished before he got there.

He was otherwise very good looking and if not adopted, will be killed if they get too crowded.
L.A. City Shelters are not "no kill" shelters and they get about 100 to 150 dogs a week in to
the 6 shelters.
