2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...1931, "The Star
Spangled Banner" is declared the U.S. national anthem, paving the way
for thousands of painful renditions of the difficult melody...1949,
RCA introduces the 7" 45 RPM format record...1956, Elvis Presley,
Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash cut tracks at the Sun
Studios in Memphis...the recordings are later released under the name
"Million Dollar Quartet"...1958, Little Richard announces he's giving
up rock 'n' roll to attend bible college...he returns to music four
years later...this week in 1959 the pop music world is shocked by the
deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, all killed
in a plane crash while touring the upper Midwest...The Beatles' "I
Want to Hold Your Hand" hits #1 on the U.S. charts this week in 1964
and Beatlemania runs rampant across the land...also in '64, Governor
Matthew Welsh of Indiana declares that the Kingsmen's hit "Louie
Louie" is obscene and pressures the Indiana Broadcaster's Association
to ban it...radio stations around the state respond by saying the
mumbled lyrics are unintelligible...to which Governor Welsh retorts
that he knows the song is dirty because his "ears tingle" when he
hears it...1969, things grow sour for the Beatles this week when John,
George, and Ringo appoint Allen Klein as their manager over Paul's
objections...it is the beginning of the end for pop's biggest band...
this same week marks their last live appearance - a 42-minute set on
the rooftop of the Apple Corps building that is filmed and becomes a
part of the movie "Let it Be"...1967, producer Joe Meek shoots the
landlord of his studio then turns the shotgun on himself...both are
DOA at a hospital 400 yards away...also in '67, Buick offers an
optional eight-track player...1972, thousands gather in Chicago to
mourn the death of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson...at the funeral,
Aretha Franklin sings and Sammy Davis Jr. reads a message from
President Nixon...1973, Kiss plays its first show in Queens, NY...
1974, when a pyrotechnics device rigged to his piano explodes
prematurely, Keith Emerson's hands are injured...1979, Paul McCartney
signs with CBS records for a rumored 20 million dollars...also in
'79, Sid Vicious's mother and friends put on a party to celebrate the
Sex Pistol's release from jail while awaiting trial for the murder of
Nancy Spungeon...during his imprisonment Vicious has lost his
tolerance to heroin and OD's...a year later, 1,000 punks march in
London to commemorate Vicious' death...his mother Ann Beverly plans to
lead the parade, but she's in the hospital-the result of an
overdose the night before...1983, Sony and Philips jointly announce
the introduction of the Compact Disc...1996, Rob Pilatus, former
singer in the discredited faux duet Milli-Vanilli is hospitalized
when he attempts to steal a car and is struck on the head by the
baseball bat-wielding owner...and that was the week that was...

Studio Tech Tip - Keeping Track
By Dennis Kambury
I recently refurbished my old four-track reel-to-reel recorder, and
thought it would be fun to listen to some old tapes made when the
recorder was new. I dug out an old cardboard box with dozens of reels
carefully packaged and prepared to take a trip down memory lane. My
enthusiasm was quickly dampened as I...

Line 6 Vetta Modeling Amp
Take the expressway to Tone City
By Freddy Prichard
Recently, I’ve been in the market for a new amp. I tried just about
everything out there, but nothing could quite cover all the bases.
Some boutique-y amps got a great sound, but it was only one great
sound, and I crave more variety. None of the multichannel amps I
tried were really satisfying across the board. So it was with a
healthy degree of skepticism that I approached Vetta, the latest
generation of modeling amp from Line 6—the folks who started it all
with the AxSys 212 five years ago (has it only been that long?)...
