LINCOLN HIGH 90031-  ARCHIVE for YEAR 2000

Back to Lincoln High 90031 MAIN PAGE
December is here!:
Local Event: Sat., Dec. 2, 2000 at 1 p.m. Highland Park Christmas Parade will proceed on Figueroa St.;  Later that day, at 's Mr. T's, (a live entertainment club rising from what was the old Highland Park Bowl bowling alley) Poncho Sanchez' latin jazz group will be playing for a fundraising event.  Poncho Sanchez hails from Norwalk, is the conga player and leader of the group that has travelled around the world enjoying much success and celebrity for many years and before going out on his own, was mentored by the late Cal Tjader, himself famous in the history of jazz artists.  Poncho Sanchez still has time for local fundraising events along with numerous engagements at larger venues.  (Sorry, I don't have the exact time for the event, but call information for Mr. T's telephone number in Los Angeles, (323 area code) for more information.)

Lincoln upcoming event:
A Banquet for the Lincoln High School Football team and fundraiser for the football program at LHS will be held on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2000 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Steven's Steak House in Commerce.  The cost is $25.00 per person.   [And for those interested in supporting the effort but who cannot attend, consider making donations of $5.00 or $10.00, or of any amount which will be specially designated for the football program,  and which will be gratefully welcomed.] Benny Madera, Class of '90 is busy working on this program and more information can be obtained by calling Vera Padilla's direct number at LHS, (323) 225-0030.   This was the initial season for the football team under the "new management" of Coach Gabriel Cotero, Class of '88, who has come back to his roots and is working on improving the football team and building up the football program at Lincoln.  Alumni, support the effort and next season we will see the results of the ongoing labor.

COMMENTARY- Bring back the traditions to LHS... this includes supporting the sports teams-  support from the students, the parents of the athletes, and the support of those who have attended Lincoln in the past.   The football field bleachers were rebuilt two years ago but there still has not been anywhere near the attendance of years gone by.   What?  The students want a winning team?  Lincoln can't buy players like some professional sports teams do, so it has to build up the program.  It is tough to have our teams work on their goals when too many other students expect to have an automatic  winner, and who try to place some stigma upon those students involved in LHS sports.  The LHS athletes have to work against poor school spirit as well as the opponents on the field, the court, the track or the pool.   Students who do not participate in the sports programs because of work commitments or time commitments elsewere, or simply due to personal lack of interest, should be glad there are students able to go out for sports competition for the school and not be a Negative factor in the formula.   There are lots of openings for the teams and if more people would participate instead of complain, there might be an improvement in the environment of high school campuses, especially here.

For many unfamiliar with the sports programs at LHS, the reason for unfamiliarity may be because funding and administrations support waned over the years in favor of strictly academics.  Only recently has there been an improvement in the funding and a reconsideration of the importance of sports in the scheme of high school activities.   Music and the arts (drama, painting, dancing, and so on) have similarly suffered cutbacks in funding and support, but are now also moving up in recognition for the value that such programs have for high school students.  It has been a long time since Lincoln has had any plays on like many other high schools in other parts of town, and not only the more wealthy areas.
There should be more opportunities for individual participation in any or all of these activities for all students willing to put in the time and effort.

Historical Note.
Wednesday, 11-22-00.  On this date 37 years ago, a Friday,  President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas while riding in a motorcade with the Governor of Texas, John Connelly, both of them accompanied by their wives.  For the next four days the coverage of the events following this tragedy occupied the television and radio airwaves almost exclusively.   Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin, was himself shot to death by Jack Ruby on Sunday in the Dallas Police Headquarters which was televised as it happened.  The funeral for the President was on Monday.  Those of you living at that time have your own lasting memories of this period.
At this time, another change in the leadership of the country is about to occur in two months under peaceful terms.  Two weeks ago the citizens cast their votes to decide who will be the next President of the United States but the final outcome between George W. Bush and Al Gore still has not been determined.  It looks like the outcome will depend on the votes cast in Florida.  This election seems to be the closest in votes cast for the two major candidates since the Kennedy - Nixon race in 1960.
 Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sat., 11/11/00- Question of the day:   Since there was a school holiday on Friday, 11-10-00, was the football game played as scheduled on 11/10 or was the school schedule wrong?
(11-7-00) REUNION EFFORTS FORMING FOR ALL LHS FOLKLORICO DANCERS AND MORE of the GRADUATED CLASSES interested in getting together.... to be posted later.
CAMPUS PLANT AND BRUSH CLEAN UP in the planning stages.  Mostly the areas from the Gym to the street.... yes, a lot to cover, but its been done before, and more help makes it go faster.
CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION ISSUE:  The rose beds on campus really need attention and possible adoption of certain tasks could be done by past classes for a certain time.    One gardener is responsible for the school.... look in your old yearbooks and you see many more gardeners were available in the past.  Each class assignment could be for a year to prune, weed, cultivate and provide maintenance to a rose bed in the front quad area or in the rear (formerly known as "Senior Court").   Also the gardener could suggest what types of tasks would work out for volunteers.
I, and many others would like to see the campus return to its former state of glory.  This is one of the more easily attainable goals in comparison to other long range goals for the school.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEETING Sat. 11/18/00 at 10 a.m. Room 201- an open meeting, visitors welcome.

(11/7/00) Football- Last Game of Season Friday, November 10th at Lincoln,
Lincoln will be hosting the last game of the season this Friday at 2:15 p.m.  Making the long trip across the hills from El Sereno will be the Wilson Mules to finish the season against an improved Lincoln Football team.  The season so far has resulted in 2 wins for the Tigers, which may not be impressive to some, but the whole football program is under new leadership this year, with an alumnus taking the teaching/coaching position this semester.  Good luck on Friday's season finale and congratulations to the team members who worked hard to bring the team through the good and bad times and reach this point.

Our teams have been criticized over many years on the lack of a winning record, but credit must be given to the the players who come out and work to get on the team and play while others fail to support the program and fail to show up at games (teachers and students both guilty of this), and verbalize their criticism of the team, the coaching, the players and the win-loss record (the students and alumni).  This is especially bothersome when it comes from students  who might make the team but are not team players and not able to put out the work and accept the necessary discipline in reaching the goals to be on the team, but have the physical ability to do it.  Much of the story is the character of the person, and, generally, I would say that this is a positive factor for the players.  Some take the wrong approach as to these things, but for the most part, something is gained from participating in the school program..

This comment also goes for the other athletic programs at Lincoln, limited as they may be in comparison to the past that many of us remember.    We had football, swimming, baseball, track and field, cross-country, gymnastics, tennis, basketball as school sports.  I have very little specific information on the present condition of these programs-  and WOULD WELCOME SOME STUDENT OR TEACHER INPUT -  so an accurate  appraisal of the current state of sports programs at Lincoln could be made.   If there are comments, let me know and I can post what I receive, with your permission.  r.l.g.  11-7-00
WANTED- ALIVE!
(11-3-00) Looking for Alumni to come to CAREER SHARE DAY, the morning of Nov. 15- Wed.- 2nd, 3rd & 4th periods will be yours to share with a classroom. Luncheon follows at 12:30 p.m.
Registration in Library 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., first session at 9 a.m.
(See Past info. which describes what this is about at:  Career Share- What happens there?
This event gets the current students together with some of the former students and the discussions range from showing what we do for a living, what and how we got to this point, what happened on our way to this point and, of course, what we remembered, liked, hated, and/or would change about LHS then or now.
Call Vera Padilla at LHS, (323) 225-0030, and if you need more info. e-mail  rguevara@earthlink.net or call me at office no. (626) 441-8890, and leave message.. If you have time limitations, just try one session, possibly the first one only, or take a long lunch break for the last session after 11 a.m., but register in advance for that.  IF YOU STILL HAVE SOME RELUCTANCE OR HESITATION, JUST COME AND SIT IN ON SOME OTHER SESSIONS, AND TRY IT WHEN YOU ARE READY.... this is a very flexible program... we want to remove reasons that people may have for not coming on over.
The advance notice of attendance is so that we can make classroom assignments and have name tags ready.... but walk-in registrations can be accommodated.  r.g.

(11-3-00)  The Harvest Festival Parade and the Health Fair at LHS are successfully accomplished.
On the morning of October 21, 2000, there gathered in the Von's parking lot Daly St. a curious combination of groups and individuals.  The drill teams of Hillside, Murchison, Nightingale and Lincoln were all practicing their respective routines, and the Lincoln Cheerleaders were being tossed about from altitudes of 10 feet or more and never dropped, as if to let the others know that this is what the younger ones have to look forward to, the "big leagues," as it were.  The elected representatives from councilman Mike Hernandez, reaching his term limit and leaving office soon, to the  newly appointed District Superintendent, whose name I cannot recall at this moment, but he was very cordial and approacable before the parade began.  There also was present, though running late, Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa who also is leaving the State office due to term limits, and is running for Mayor of Los Angeles.   The Lincoln Band was present and ready, along with a contingent from the football team.
At 10:30 the parade began.  There was an unsettling meeting of traffic at Daly and North Broadway with the parade making a left turn to head up on North Broadway, and the traffic control officers all the while positioned themselves to direct the Daly St. vehicle traffic coming from the Main St. side to continue with a left turn for them, heading for the freeway.

Next time we plan to have NO cars near that intersection.  Leading the assemblage of mostly community groups and organizations was RUDY MORENO, Class of 1974 (although his banner mistakenly showed him to be a few more along by displaying "Class of 1969")  Let it not go unnoticed that Rudy is currently a performing stand-up comic featuring generous reflections on his Chicano/latino experiences, while he performs at the Ice House in Pasadena regularly and hosts a Latino Comedy Showcase on Tuesdays----AND is a frequent host on the Spanish Language cable network GALAVISION production of "Que Locos" airing on Sundays and Wednesdays.  (Viewing Hint:  this is one of the rare ENGLISH language shows on that network so bilingual ability is entirely optional.)  Lupe Sonnie, school principal, rode in Mr. Martinez' vintage Model T Ford.

The parade route continued up North Broadway to Lincoln Park Avenue to the rear of the school where refreshments were available to conclude the short trek, slightly uphill, as well.
THE ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR was in operation at the campus site, with many public and private organizations presenting information on the services provided by each.  Free health screenings were offered, along with many people available to give information on a personal level.  Live music was provided by a band of seasoned musicians (meaning players well over 21) although their name was nowhere mentioned ... that credit to be provided later.   The weather began as a cloudy day much like the way it is just before the rainstorm begins, but it later warmed up a bit and was a very comfortable day for the parade and the health fair.
Another parade is planned for next year, with there to be a parade to start the day, the Health Fair on the LHS campus, and a league FOOTBALL game in the afternoon on the field.   This should be able to bring out more people and make for a better showing all around, especially provide the opportunity to see a game on the home field for those Lincoln Alumni who are unable to make the WEEKDAY home games (no lights on the field- remember from your days at LHS.  It still has not changed.).

We are hoping for the parade participation to grow.  There seems to be some reluctance on the part of Wilson High in joining in (but wasn't that something of a tradition, that we should again experience the ever-present conflicts we had with the school in the past?  Neighboring high schools will again be invited... this is a "northeast- eastside" thing, you know.  But we may have to look to other guests from further away who just want to perform and nothing more.   The local elementary schools and Nightingale Jr...oops!   "Middle" School  are always dependable for spirit and participation.

Thanks to all who helped to make this all come together this year and your hours spent were appreciated at every level.   We look forward to an even bigger event next year.... and volunteers are always needed along the way before the event, and during the event.
By the way, Lincoln has a freshened up marquee in front at the corner of N. Broadway and Lincoln Park Avenue.....  maybe next year we could have some of that white space used to post news of the Parade, the Health Fair and the date and time on both sides since that is often the only way some people learn of events at LHS, and some coordination and cooperation from the school's side on this point would really be nice.   The people power for this is always available if we have the opportunity.... we just need the o.k. from the school.

1967 & 1968 Classes Picnic Held Sat., Oct. 14th
The combined 1967 and 1968 Class Reunion Picnic was held on October 14th at Schubarum Regional Park in Rowland Heights and the weather could not have been better.   Lots of school acquantances were renewed and we learned of many more of us being related or knowing of others in the classes that were relatives of ours or our friends.  Lincoln Heights is known for its residents having the many connections that remain after graduation from high school.... brothers, sisters, cousins, and the large families make for a lot of interesting connections that link people to others.   The picnic was fun and really long overdue considering that we all wanted something after our (1967 Class) reunion in 1997, and the 1968 Class(es) did not have a reunion since 1993 or thereabouts.   More picnic news later.   The idea of combining classes seems to be workable because we all know so many in other classes- aside from the relatives.

  TIERRA Performs at DNC Party
The Democratic National Convention was held in Los Angeles in August and onTuesday of that week there was a party organized by the Latino segment which featured entertainment by Celia Cruz appearing on the main stage on Hope St. and, over on the smaller stage was the venue where Tierra entertained the partygoers.  Lincoln High alumni Steve Salas on vocals and Bobby Navarrete (Cl. of S'67) on Sax, flute and vocal backup were in fine form, with many of the time tested favorites presented to satisfy the audience which included convention delegates from across the country, many of whom had only heard recordings over the years but had not seen the band play live before.   It was a nice touch to an overall  boring convention which offered no  surprises or suspense as some of the Democratic Conventions have in the past.  Downtown was mostly deserted during the evening. partly from fear of the demonstrators and partly from fear of the police agencies who were occupying the city very visibly... you didn't know who was the threat, the police or the demonstrators.  The night before the Rage Against the Machine concert was ended by the police decision that there were too many unruly people there (otherwise known as "troublemakerss").   The police were apparently embarrassed by their lack of action a few weeks earlier when the Laker Championship was secured and the crowds burned vehicles, including two police cars.   Police appeared to let the situation continue until it essentially moved away from the Staples Center and then LAPD moved in.   The CHP moved in dozens of patrol officers for the week and many were assigned to stand in front of the various hotels, shotguns at the ready.   The Sheriffs Department was crowding the driveways between the Courthouse and the Hall of Administration on Wednesday of that week to protect the County property from damage.   The deputies were decked out in their military version, with helmets, gas masks at the ready on leg pouches, cars running and whatever else they needed to be sure they were not going to lose should there be a confrontation.
The Monday night problems were something of a release of police agression, and some of them were ready to taste battle, probably the younger ones, while others were just there to do their job.  In retrospect, I thing that there would be a lot more self-control exercised by the law enforcement contingent if they had large identifying numbers like basketball or baseball players.   The protection of annonymity offered by the groups of uniformed persons not readily distinguisable from each other would then vanish and those officers tending to be affected by overzealous exercise of force might avoid going beyond justifiable force if they knew they could be identified more readily and thus accountable for their actions.   Just an idea.  If they act properly now, they will do so in the future.  The problem is the one in a group of many that may wind up getting too involved with the physical action and costing the city another huge civil settlement.

Coming Saturday, October 21, 2000-
Lincoln Heights 1st Annual
Harvest Festival Parade..... Beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The staging area will be the Von's parking lot and the parade route will continue on North Broadway to Lincoln Park Avenue, entering the school parking lot.  Pick a spot somewhere along the route and enjoy.  Our Grand Marshal for this inaugural event will be RUDY MORENO, the popular stand-up comedian and member of the Lincoln Class of 1974.  Rudy is prominent among the comedy professionals, currently performing throughout the U.S., and is still able to find time to host a Latino Comedy Showcase on a regular basis at the world-famous ICE HOUSE in Pasadena, along with several hosting assignments for the weekly "Que Loco" t.v. show which presents Latino stand-up comedy on the GalaVision cable television network.... and the seeds of this career path were sown at good ol' Lincoln.
There will be lots of entries in the parade which will give some essential variety to satisfy your parade viewing needs.

Immediately Following the parade- on the LHS Campus -
visit the Annual Health Fair, with the Community Expo included for good measure...

There will be exhibits and free services offered from a variety of health service organizations which range from blood pressure screening, vision testing to more involved testing.  Planned Parenthood, several Clinics and Hospitals and medical care providers will have representatives there and some services will be offered without charge.  There will be Elder Care information and Resources for those of us who may be able to participate in health and senior day programs, along with organizations that are not widely known which can provide psychological and mental health assistance and referrals. This is a good opportunity to see what is available before the need to consult arises.   Lots of handouts and resource material is available.
There will be food and beverage booths and communitiy information from other community sources along with the Lincoln student organizations, including the sports program participants.
Information on Los Angeles City services will be available, along with City Council office representatives to answer questions.
Entertainment is planned, with a Folklorico dance program as a feature.
Come to visit after the parade and see who else is there from the Lincoln past that you might know.

reminder:

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEETING coming up on SATURDAY, SEPT. 23, 2000 at 9:30 a.m. Room 201 (This is on 1st Floor of building on Lincoln Park Ave connected to overpass/bridge)/ parking in rear in school lot- free, as always.
(coffee supplied, byo donuts, etc.)  We need to have some decisions made on the upcoming projects and discuss the work needed to be done for these projects to succeed.

Past attendance has been "irregular," to characterize it generously.  Ongoing members of the committee please let Vera know if you CANNOT make the meeting.... these are open meetings, so other alumni can come by to see if there is anything that may be of interest to get into.   If there are new announcements that anyone has, either individually or for a group, this may be the time and place to present them.  These meetings are about one hour long at the most....  so you can still do other things on Saturday.

Index to CONTENTS
There is some information here that you may find about Lincoln's past graduating classes, AND activities of the freshly resurrected Alumni Association which will be holding special events this year. You will also be able to find more information about the issues that should be of interest to alumni.  Your input can work to influence, inform, help or simply enjoy the situation, as appropriate.

 For Year 2000-a general overview:
The Alumni Association has room for planning and organizing help.   The events that have happened in the past have been a result of the efforts of a small number of the entire group.

Installing lights on the football field is one of the projects, and getting closer to happening, but more support would help.  Increasing the school spirit and/or morale of the students and alumni is a continuing goal (have you ever been to the campus right after the nutrition or lunch periods?  Not a pretty sight.  Lots of trash cans in sight but still trash all over the grounds.
Yearbooks are making a comeback, but class sweaters and rings are mostly a memory of the past.  The music and arts programs are resurfacing in the L.A. Unified School District, but a lot depends on the choice of the principal.  Bringing back some of these things may help out on the academic side.   Lots of resources exist if the desire is made known.  Does anyone remember when there was a drama dept. producing plays? ...When the band program in the '60's fostered musicians' gigs on the weekends ("Lincoln High" stencils could be seen on the players' instrument cases at of the local dances).  Oh, yes... let's not forget.... when you could attend Lincoln from 7th grade to graduation.... [was that too much of a good thing?]  Currently, approximately 500 students from the Bell High area are bused daily due to the extra room at Lincoln after all the available local spaces are used.  This may be a reason for some morale and commitment problems, but solutions are needed.
There are lots of you who have talent and energy to assist in the efforts of the Association.  Time is always a concern, but that is adjustable to what you have available.  This is always the case with any organization, but there are lots of ideas and activities that need to be brought out and developed.... not just for social events, but that's always fun.
After a year of a relatively light calendar of alumni events, some changes will be happening, and there should be several opportunities to participate in the upcoming academic year. /r.l.g. 7-23-00

7/23/00-  "No Rifles for the ROTC Programs" - Under the "Politically Correct" category of extreme actions that suppoosedly intelligent people will take to prove an absurd point.... in the last month before the summer vacation, the L.A.U.S. D. Board of Education approved a measure that was brought up by member Victoria Fields (correct me, if I am wrong on the name, but all who voted for this bear the blame now.).
The ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY on guns is to include  the rifles that the ROTC program uses for the regular program AND  those used by the Drill Teams and the Color Guards.   First of all, how do you run a program with responsibility when you will not have genuine rifles to work with?  I don't think wooden rifle-shaped forms will foster any feeling of worth by the ROTC cadets.  Teaching responsibility is part of the program.
Possibly a more important point to bring out is that the rifles that were used for Drill Team when we performed were welded to plug the barrel.  These need to be left alone if the same spins and throws are going to work as before;  handling the weight is part of the work.  The M-1's that were carried in regular drills were disabled, though not welded at that time (the 60's).  I remember we used something like Springfield '03's that had the barrels and other metal parts brightly  chromed and the stocks were painted  black, all of which made the movements look as good as possible.
I do not know what the plan is for Rifle Teams, since we used .22's for competition in the  60's but I think air rifles have taken over.  I think air rifles are the last level that the marksmanship program can work with before having to resort to slingshots or blowguns.
Oh, yeah, I need to remind all that these are rifles not handguns, not concealables, and are not being used for criminal purposes, but to the contrary, are part of an organized program that has some foundation as an element of the country's defense and service.  I am not aware of ROTC cadets engaging in anything that calls for banning the weapons.
All firearms are not bad in and of themselves.   I think the problem is how things are used and why they are used in certain ways by some categories of people.   But leave it to someone of authority to feel compelled to protect us from ourselves, as if we do not have any sense at all with handling things the way they have been handled successfully in the past.
This ranks up there with the suspensions of the kids who were suspended for bringing butter knives to spread their peanut butter or what-have-you on their sandwiches.... zero tolerance is zero tolerance.    Somebody tell me where is the insanity,,,, is it really in the "problem" or could it be in the cure?.
1.  Alumni News and Events- Find out the latest changes here.
Alumni News and Events - News ABOUT and FOR Alumni.
Latest events:
August 13, 2000:  Coming to Lincoln on Saturday, October 21, 2000, will be the annual Health Fair on campus, preceded by the 1st Annual Friendship Parade..... planning is well underway and there will be more on this as we get the school calendar underway for 2000-2001.
November will bring the return of the "ALUMNI CAREER SHARE DAY"- after a year's hiatus, this acitivity which is has been popular with the participating alumni, the students and the faculty, is returning... The day's time frame for this event will be from 8:30 a.m. until the luncheon at mid-day.  The organization of the event is, as with nearly all events, past and future, a lot of work for a overburdened few.  What makes this event is the participation of the alumni.... and there are too many that are able to come but the connections are not made.  We will try to improve on that.  All former Lincoln grads who want to interact with the students and let them have some of your feedback on the things you have learned about Lincoln, about education, about work and whatever else you possess that you can share that you think you might liked to have known about when you were in school.   more to come as I can gather more information from the ever-elusive meeting dates for the Alumni Association.

Coming to Plaza de la Raza: Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeno Band, Friday, July 28, 2000 at 8:00 p.m., 3540 N. Mission Road (that's Lincoln Park where Lincoln Park Ave. meets the Park.) (323) 223-2475.  The Band has received good reviews and is a cultural item at the same time.  From what I've heard, the band is worth the effort of going to see them perform (although not a FREE event).  I am Posting the item here instead of on the "Events" page to be sure the event is noticed and secondly, to show that the website Plaza de la Raza maintains is woefully neglected...to the detriment of the agency and it does a disservice to the neighborhood/community in not letting us know what is happening...it ends with July 1998 events... please.

Sat., July 22, 2000:  Pet Adoption of shelter animals will be held at the LaBrea Tar Pits today and tomorrow.  Attend, adopt and save a pet from being added to the thousands of unwanted cats and dogs killed in the shelters each year.  Info on saving pets from this fate- AnimalMatch.Net Information and Links

(July 12, 2000.)   Coming in October for the Combined Classes of 1967 and 1968- The organizers for the two years ( really 4 classes:  two summer and two winter classes) have planned and are hosting a Picnic as an event "in between" the customary reunions.  As an informal event for all ages, there will be this picnic for the class members to get together on a casual basis, at low cost.... tickets will be $5.00 adults, ages 5 to 15 are $3.00, and younger than that.... free.  More information and contact numbers
Invitations are being sent out by regular mail, and there are lots of people without current addresses.... if you are in this group and want to be sure that you are notified of the events that are anticipated, contact the organizing committee.  Feel free to make suggestions on what kind of events, gatherings, get-togethers, casuals, or breakfast meetings or anything else that you would like to see, something that would bring out the members of these great classes from their local niches and far corners of the earth.   Email rguevara@earthlink.net or call  contact numbers to be posted soon.

COMING VERY SOON- Photos:    I have finally brought myself to nearly-current technology and am able to scan photos now and will be putting them up for your viewing enjoyment as time permits me to scan and post..   r.g.

May 15, 2000- This site has had little information to report in the last six or seven months.  The information that I get comes from checking in with the Alumni Association and various news sources where information is reported.  There is no direct information from the Lincoln administration since the school has never had a facility to inform the public at large about anything voluntarily.   At this time, the information that I have to report depends on other sources and from various news sources. Contributions from others is sought, along with suggestions about what you want to see in these pages.  Fortunately, I have been able to attend a few of the Alumni Association meetings at Lincoln, and will add some new event infomation ASAP, as time permits me.
I know that there are several persons that check this site to see what is new about Lincoln, Lincoln Heights and the general situation locally since they no longer live around here.  The plan for this year is to include more information and some comments on the past events, along with some photos accumulated over the recent years which will bring some of you distant Lincolnians a current view of the area, and the changes that are happening.  r.g.

Current news:   (5/18/00) Lincoln High has new football coach with plans to bring a winning season to the Tiger home.  A event to welcome the new coach to the campus is set for August.... still in planning stages.  By the way, the coach, whose identity is not being revealed yet, is a Lincoln grad.......

Comedy is one grad's specialty-Tuesday night, Aug. 15th next Latino Comedy Showcase performance....
A quick note of recognition for his accomplishment is due for RUDY MORENO who has moved up to the professional status of a stand-up comic with emphasis on Latino/Chicano life.  (What year was he, if anyone knows?)  He was the host and performed at the "2nd Annual Latino Comedy Showcase" at the Ice House in Pasadena on Tuesday, November 23, 1999, which I was able to attend.    RUDY has made a success of doing the things that got many of us in trouble in school, and getting paid for it. His ability to relate the stories of his past to us brings familiar memories of the same things happening to us or people we knew. The style he brings to the stage is truly funny.... and he has picked up a few pounds since high school, which he is not at all shy about mentioning.  He has come a long way from the noon d.j. at Lincoln to performing at nationally recognized events.  He was voted #1 latino comic in the nation ( and I would assume the voters are other comics who have ideas on this.)

RUDY also introduced four latino comic performing one of whom was JEFF GARCIA, young kid but very talented in his story-telling and relation to the audience. AND he was funny.  Another comic, ERNIE G., was a Franklin High student in the past, graduated with a B.S. in Psychology from Loyola-Marymount University (if his website resume is correct!), and has some very vivid and funny bits. He is a very physical type, acting out much of his work for the benefit of the audience. He has a website called Ernie G.com  The others were excellent as well, but there is too much to put in without this getting to be a review of each performer.

Be assured that if you find RUDY MORENO on t.v. or at a live performance, you will have a good time if you can check him out. /r.guevara

(6/18/00)  Rudy is currently hosting a regular schedule of Latino Comedy Showcase on most Tuesdays at the Icehouse in Pasadena, along with appearing at other venues.   (r.g.)

(Yeah, I know, the photo above is taken from the LAUSD Web Page for LHS....I am only using it temporarily because I don't have anything else ready, and it looks nice and neat.  I plan to use some photos taken over the last few months, which should be more interesting.... or at least different.
