2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________
This is the week that was in matters musical...it's a fateful week
for the Fab Four...1962, they perform their first audition for a
major record label, Decca, in London...after listening to 15 songs,
Decca turns them down...Beatlemania goes off the deep end this week
in 1963 when John and Paul are named "The Outstanding Composers of
1963" by the music critics of the London Times, and Sunday Times
music critic Richard Buckle declares them "the greatest composers
since Beethoven"...exactly four years later (1967), the Beatles'
"Magical Mystery Tour," which Tom Wolfe will later claim is inspired
by the travels of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, premieres on
BBC-TV...it creates plenty of mystery in its own right when
audiences try to figure out what the Liverpudlian novice filmmakers
could possibly have been thinking...1971, New Year's Eve Paul files
a writ in London High Court which marks the legal dissolution of the
band... 1980, nearly three weeks to the day after his murder, John
Lennon gets his final number-one hit with his and Yoko's "Starting
Over"... 1999, at his home near London, George Harrison is stabbed
several times as he and his wife, Olivia, wrestle an intruder to the
ground and hold him till police arrive...George recovers...this week
in 1962 pop singer Brenda Lee suffers slight injuries attempting to
rescue her poodle, Cee Cee, by running back into her burning home
after the dog...the house burns, the dog dies from smoke inhalation,
and Brenda is left without her favorite touring companion...1961,
the Beach Boys play their first concert under that name at the
Ritchie Valens Memorial Concert in Long Beach...eight years later
(1969) Jimi introduces his new "Band of Gypsies," featuring Buddy
Miles and Billy Cox on New Year's Eve at New York's Fillmore East...
Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen loses his left arm after a vicious
car crash in England this week in 1984...Allen and the band earn the
respect of musicians everywhere when he carries on quite effectively
as the band's drummer...the Boss gets his cheek blasted open by a
firecracker thrown onstage by some nimrod at a Cleveland New Year's
Eve concert in 1979...last year Guns N' Roses plays their first live
show in seven years on New Year's Eve at the House of Blues...the
same week, Mick Jagger is elected Chairman of the Mustique
Educational Trust for the island of Mustique, which he shares with
such neighbors as Sting, Bowie, and Phil Collins...he's responsible
for maintaining school and library facilities...1930, The first
English language commercial radio station in Europe, Radio
Luxembourg, begins operation...1968, Zep makes their U.S. debut in
Boston...1992 Harry Connick Jr. is busted at Kennedy Airport trying
to smuggle a 9mm pistol onto a plane...and that was the week that
was.
