This was the week that was in matters musical...1954, R&B singer
Johnny Ace fails to meet his curtain call when he loses at Russian
Roulette with himself backstage at a Houston concert...1957, Elvis
Presley receives greetings from Uncle Sam when his draft notice is
delivered personally by the chairman of the Memphis draft board...
Pat Boone's "April Love" owns the top slot on the charts...DJ Alan
Freed's Christmas Rock & Roll Spectacular opens a ten-day New York
run this week in 1958...the show features 17 acts including Bo
Diddley, Chuck Berry, The Moonglows, Jackie Wilson, and the Everly
Brothers...Bo steals the show...1960, Chubby Checker gets a raise
when the Philadelphia Orphan's Court increases the 19-year-old's
weekly allowance from $150 to $200 ...1964, Radio London, an offshore
pirate station begins broadcasting much to the chagrin of U.K.
authorities...the station finally sinks in 1967 when it is busted
under provisions of the Marine Offences Act...Brian Wilson of the
Beach Boys suffers a nervous breakdown while on a flight from L.A.
to Houston at the beginning of a two-week tour and quits doing live
performances...Crosby, Stills & Nash perform publicly this week in
1968 for the first time...1969, Motown's favorite girl group, The
Supremes, make their swan song appearance on TV's Ed Sullivan Show...
they sing "Someday We'll Be Together" presaging a troubled 2000
reunion tour that hits the road sans original backup singers Cindy
Birdsong and Mary Wilson...1970, President Richard Nixon commends MGM
Records head cheese Mike Curb for axing eighteen MGM acts who are
said to promote drug use...in a related item during that same week,
Elvis turns up at the White House where he offers to help Tricky Dick
fight the scourge of drugs besetting the nation...Elvis gives Nixon a
chromeplated .45; the Commander in Chief returns the favor with a DEA
badge...turns out Presley is an avid badge collector...Ian Anderson
and Glen Cornick form Jethro Tull this week in 1967...the band is
named after an 18th-century inventor of farm tools...1973, Stephen
Stills is on the losing end of a paternity suit brought by Harriet
Tunis...a Stills lawyer, attempting to undermine the plaintiff's
credibility, asks the jury, "How can you believe a witness who works
in the record business?"...Tom Johnson of the Doobie Brothers is
busted for pot possession this week in 1973...his court date is set
for the same week as his band's latest album release titled "What
Were Once Vices Are Now Habits"...guitarist Joe Walsh joins the
Eagles this week in '75 replacing Bernie Leadon who strikes out on a
solo career...also in '75, Ike and Tina Turner are ripped off when a
suitcase containing $86,000 in concert receipts is stolen...this week
in 1976 Isaac Hayes files for bankruptcy protection...1977, the
legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem reopens...1980, Stiff Records
releases an album titled "The Wit and Wisdom of Ronald Reagan"...it
contains 40 minutes of silence...1984, the #1 Billboard pop hit is
the Bee Gee's "How Deep is Your Love"...the song is the first single
from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack...the record holds down
the top album position for an astounding 24 weeks...1990, Soul
Brother Number One, James Brown, gives his first concert in two years
at Ft. Jackson, SC, for soldiers whose leave has been canceled due to
the Gulf War...Brown is on a four-day furlough from prison...1999, a
woman is arrested in Maui after breaking into George Harrison's
home...police say she cooked up a frozen pizza, downed some root
beer, did a bit of laundry, and rang up her mother in New Jersey...
exactly one week later Harrison has far more serious intruder
problems at his British home...and that was the week that was...

Recording Tech Tip - Capturing The Sound Of Eight Tiny Reindeer
By Dennis Kambury
Remember when you were a kid, waiting for the soft clip of reindeer
hoofs on your roof? If you were like most kids, you probably fell
asleep long before Santa began unloading his sleigh, and those sounds
were lost in your subconscious dreams. Now, you want to reinvent
those long-lost sounds for your own kid's school play (or maybe
convince them that there really IS a Santa Claus). Here are some
sound design tips to help you recreate those magical memories...

Digitech Genesis 3
By D.J Adams
Before I start, I have to warn you - I'm a card-carrying member
of Gear Junkies Anonymous! I typically run my guitar through
several stomp boxes, and that's before it goes into the mixing
board! The more I can twist, bend, and torture my guitar tone, the
happier I am. You can imagine my bliss when I scored this gig with
Musician's Friend to review the new DigiTech Genesis3 GeNetX™
Guitar Processor...

Line 6 Vetta Amp
Take The Expressway To Tone City
By Freddy PrichardBy
Recently, I’ve been in the market for a new amp. I tried just
about everything out there, but nothing could quite cover all the
bases. Some boutique-y amps got a great sound, but it was only one
great sound, and I crave more variety. None of the multichannel
amps I tried were really satisfying across the board. So it was
with a healthy degree of skepticism that I approached Vetta, the
latest generation of modeling amp from Line 6—the folks who started
it all with the AxSys 212 five years ago (has it only been that
long?)...
