2a. ___THE WEEK IN REVIEW: The Week That Was_________________________

This was the week that was in matters musical...1956, Elvis
Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash put down some
impromptu tracks at Sun Records...amazingly, it's 25 years before the
tracks are released...1966, Ray Charles is convicted of heroin and
pot posession...he gets a five-year suspended sentence and is fined
$10,000...this same week in 1997, Brother Ray's manager, Carl Hunter,
is popped in Nagoya, Japan, for pot posession...this week marks the
final appearances by Janis Joplin with Big Brother and The Holding
Company, and of Cream in 1968, and by Martha and The Vandellas in
1972...1969, Simon and Garfunkel's TV special hits the airwaves sans
the sponsorship of AT&T which gets cold feet when it learns the duo
plans to show footage of Robert Kennedy's funeral and Vietnam War
soundbytes...1970, Eric Burdon launches a "Curb The Clap" campaign
offering L.A. Free Clinic donors a bumper sticker with that slogan
..Burdon calls the disease "the number-one sickness in the record
business today"...1971, Sly and The Family Stone's "Family Affair"
rides the top of the charts on Sly Stone's smacked-out vocal...1972,
expressing the feminist temper of the times, Helen Reddy's "I Am
Woman" nails the top of the charts...in 1986, during a performance of
"Missionary Man" in Birmingham, England, Eurythmics singer Annie
Lennox rips off her bra...1975, Deep Purple bodyguard Patsy Collins
apparently dies following a plunge down an elevator shaft in Jakarta,
Indonesia...the falls seems to be the outcome of a scuffle with
promoters who owe the band $750,000...after falling six floors,
Collins manages to crawl into a taxi asking to be taken to a hospital
..alledgedly, the strapping Collins is never seen again...the
following night's concert is marred by mayhem when baton-wielding
Indonesian police injure hundreds of rock-starved fans...exactly a
year later, Deep Purple guitarist Tommy Bolin dies of a heroin OD
following a concert in Miami...in 1976 the Sex Pistols appear on
Britain's "Today Show" following the release of their album "Anarchy
in The U.K."...the show's host goads Pistol bassist Glenn Matlock
into using the "F" word on the air...the faux pas results in their
blacklisting among Brit concert promoters...1979, 11 fans are
trampled to death at a Who concert in Cincinnati...this same week in
1973, the band spends a night in the Montreal lockup following their
destruction of a hotel suite...the incident is later memorialized in
John Entwistle's song, "Cell Block Number Seven"...1976, gunmen spray
bullets into Bob Marley's Kingston home injuring Marley, wife Rita,
and manager Don Taylor...none are wounded seriously and the Wailers
perform two nights later...1980, Led Zeppelin calls it quits...1982,
Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is released...it goes on to sell 40
million copies and underwrite numerous plastic surgeries...three
years earlier the Gloved One gets a gold record for his "Don't Stop
'til You Get Enough" the first of four Top Ten hits from his "Off The
Wall" album...Neil Young is sued in 1983 by Geffen Records which
claims that his new material is "not commercial in nature and is
musically uncharacteristic of his previous albums"...the suit is
ultimately dropped and years later entertainment mogul David Geffen
calls it "a bad mistake"... 1986, Jerry Lee Lewis enters the Betty
Ford Clinic to wean himself from painkillers...also in '86, a suit is
brought against Judas Priest and CBS Records alleging that two
teenagers committed suicide following a six-hour session of listening
to the band's records...1988, LL Cool J performs the first rap
concert held in Africa...1994, rapper Tupac Shakur is shot five times
outside a New York studio...two days later, while he is recuperating,
a jury convicts Shakur of sexual abuse in an unrelated case...though
he recovers from his wounds, he dies nearly two years later in a
Vegas shooting...1998, Bobby Brown turns himself in on a bench
warrant for drunk driving in Florida...also in '98, Jewel stops a New
York benefit concert to ask for nail clippers...after an audience
member provides the implement, the freshly manicured singer/guitarist
resumes the show...1999, rapper Jay-Z is arrested in New York in
connection with the stabbing of music biz executive Lance "Un" Rivera
at the city's Kit Kat club...he ultimately pleads guilty and gets
probation when the victim refuses to cooperate with prosecutors...the
New York Post reports that a large chunk of change changed hands
earning Rivera's silence...and that was the week that was...

Ludwig® Classic Maple Series
Fab Four and Zep Set drum kits
By D.J. Adams

Like the classics? If so, you're gonna love Ludwig's Classic Maple
kits. The Fab Four four-piece set combines today's technology with
the cool '60s style of Ringo Starr's history-making Ludwig outfit...

Roland® V-Session Set™
Electronic percussion system
By D.J. Adams

"Ultimate," "tops," "best," "finest," "most." They're all glowing
superlatives bestowed upon top-line products. I had recently heard
those words spoken in the same sentence as "Roland's V-Session."
Knowing that such high praise is sometimes undeserved, a little
throne time behind Roland's flagship V-Session electronic drum set
was in order. The experience left me groping for an even-more-potent
adjective to describe this musical marvel...
