The majority of organized religion is focused on individual salvation. But, you can find a minority that is involved in social action--- whether on the "religious right" or "religious left" all over the world.
While the "right" tries to "get back to traditional values", the "left" is "fighting for social justice." There is truth in each. But, do those who are in these groups know their own neighbor? Are they truly building a beloved community in their family and neighborhood or village? Do we practice and live authentic spirituality? Or, are we just caught up in the whirlwind of regular politics albeit with a religious flavor?
There have been a number of spiritual social activists that were great because they transcended their religious and social conditioning and became universal beings --- ready to serve all. Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and today Dr. Ariyaratne all have developed an integrated world view and desired to create a beloved community.
They were not interested in reforming the political system. They were working to create a new society from the old--- beginning inside themselves. They were true Boddhisatvas --- awakened spiritual beings helping all humankind. They were not "left" or "right" as they went beyond these distictions, but true non-violent revolutionaries calling us to build a new society from the old.
