Secular community movements are a reflection of the view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education. There is a necessary separation of the "church" from the "state"---but, spirituality has also been thrown out. The main well spring of creativity and invention in human beings has been redefined as "superstition." We are left with a secular, scientific, and materialistic view of life--- a modern secular religion.
While secular community efforts are very positive, they fit into a larger materialistic and "market" oriented local, national, and global society. Unwittingly, positive community efforts serve only to reinforce the desire within people to consume more things.
Many people realize now that the desire for ultimate meaning and profound connection (both spiritual values) are as important as the quest for economic security. Only a balance between these can lead to a healthy society.
Can secular community efforts expand their vision beyond crisis oriention and consumerism? When do we start creating the Beloved Community?
