Seminars, Inc. Oradell,
New Jersey Built a company to provide computer training seminars throughout the US. We specialized in making complex, new technologies understandable to all levels of students. Developed the company from conception to full growth, offering over 200 seminars and taught more than 5000 students per year. Direct mail advertising for public seminars sent out millions of brochures via bulk mail and generated more than $3 million in annual sales. Sales of in-house seminars generated by cold-calling, broadcast fax, mailings, and meetings with prospective clients generated an additional $125,000 in annual sales to corporations. We
handled all aspects of the business, including: |

Technical projects: Designed, developed and supported our order entry, billing and attendance management program. I was originally written for the FoxPro database and later converted to Visual Basic. I also developed a UK version of the system which also handled VAT taxes. Built Web servers running Linux and Apache that were used for training courses on web design, HTML, CGI. Networked and managed all PCs in the office, with a Windows NT server running Microsoft Small Business Server (BackOffice), that provided sharing of file, fax, printer, and Internet access. |

1998 - 2000 |
President Essential Solutions, Inc. Oradell, New Jersey Provided computer hardware and software sales, service and support for small businesses. Purchase and installed hardware and software for PCs running Windows NT/95/98/2000. Constructed a series of fault-tolerant server systems for clients, incorporating Veritas Backup Exec, DAT tape backup, RAID, UPS and automatic shutdown and startup procedures. I converted the company from a Novell Netware server to a Microsoft NT based server. Reconstructed Windows NT/Exchange servers damaged by Hurricane Floyd. The systems were undocumented, and so extensive work was involved to save account details, system configuration settings and user files before rebuilding was done. Computerized small businesses by upgrading their systems and installing multi-user applications such as ACT! client management software, Intuit QuickBooks bookkeeping, and Pentagon 2000 ERP. I also configured the systems to permit on-the-road access using Symantec’s PC Anywhere. Subcontracted to repair and extend a commercial website using Allaire ColdFusion. The previous contractor had created a convoluted and non-working system for the client, I had to read and document all work done before, fix the bugs, and add extra features. All this had to be done on a very tight schedule to have the site ready for the client’s presentation at a conference. |
