Latest DBL News
When it Rains, It Pours
The drought has finally ended for the Twins' DiMaggio. After a 0-12 start to the season, Joltin Joe, unleashed
the power that only his bat has to show. In a 15-1 rout of the Rangers, DiMaggio went 4-6, 2b, HR, and RBI.
Yet, his coming out is overshadowed by the guy in from of him, Hornsby, 2-5, 2b, HR, and 5 RBIs. Things were
going well for Dineen up until the 8th inning. Then disaster struck. Dineen couldn't finish the inning and
was yanked. Goldsmith didn't do any better. Make it 10 runs in the 8th for the Twins and season opening
sweep of the Rangers.
Other news and rumors: KC and Washington split in their opening series with each other. KC
got the win in the final game in which the ball left the park quite frequently. Notable is the the KC rookie,
Tommy Holmes, hit his first homerun of his career...it seems the long ball was the only deciding factor in the
Jays/Orioles game...it was another close one for the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The Sox manage to take
3 of 4 from the Yanks...(DBLSN)

It's Hurtin' Time
For the first time in along time, the Pirates find themselves starting the season with something special, a
winning record. The Bucs sit at a 2-1 record after beating the Braves 9-5. Bill Doak pitched a good game, but
the kudos go to the lineup, which produced 16 hits. The player of the day was Bob Veach, 4-5, 2b, HR and 4 RBI.
Could this be a new Pirates team this season? The Braves took a early season loss on the roster as Bresnahn
on the 15 day DL. McGraw get to join him for one day.
Other news and rumors: A decision has been finally made for the Mets and Cardinals, as Carl
Mays and Orval Overall each received a decision for their starts. Congratulations, boys. The decision was
not in favor of the Cards, as the Season 23 champs start their season with a record of 0-3....Colorado add a
third win for the season, and remain undefeated at the moment. Tilly Walker hit his first homerun for the
Rockies, which the manager will the first of many. Is the power drought over in Colorado?

Unleashed
The Senators surprised the Royals with another comeback win, as Frank Thomas, Tony Lazzeri, and Travis Jackson
powered Washington to a win. The Royals manager is still trying to figure out why his pitching staff give up
the long ball too much. First hint, look at your players stats and there you will find your answer. It may
be a long season for the Royals if Washington continues to hit this well every game, but don't get too excited,
the season still has 97 games to go. Bobo Newsom gave up three homeruns, has gracious contribution to the
Royals. Kiss, kiss, Bobo, Alex sends his love.
Other news and rumors: DBLSN received word there was an emergency meeting in the head offices
of the Twins organization. The public relations rep and the manager met to converse about the recent comments
made by the Rockies manager. Word has it the Twins have no idea why the Roxs have such animosity towards the
Twins. There may be a new PR campaign coming out of Minnesota, especially after the accusations of poor player
treatment of last season. Since the return of Leonard, DBLSN has made several attempts to get an interview, but
Dutch has been avoiding the press...Boston's Ripper Collins hit his third homer of the season. This may be a
hot thing right now, then again the Ripster is now in Fenway. The Green Monster may be the best thing ever to
happen to Collins. Too bad, the homer didn't help the Sox. Matt Kilroy "Was Here", struck out eight batters
which may have helped the Yanks more than they think. Defensively, the Yanks just looked poor, but the Sox
couldn't captilaize on those errors. Hard loss for Boston...(DBLSN)

No Decisions Made for Mets and Cardinals
Two days of games and strange things have already occurred. Accusations of the curse have already been dropped
several times. In their second against each other, the Mets and Cardinals have yet to have a starting pitcher
with a decision. Today it was Carl Lundgren (NYM) and Walter Johnson (STL), neither got the decision in the
outcome. The game started with the Cardinals scoring first in the first. Then the Mets capitalized on a Arky
Vaughn error, allowing Reggie Jackson and Joe Gordon to score. A third run followed before the inning had
ended. Then the Cards singled themselves a run for four innings straight, retaking the lead. In the 7th, the
Mets chased Johnson off the mound after scoring two runs, which tied up the game. Jack Coombs, who was brought
in during the 7th, stayed in the game. The game went into extras and the Mets scored, giving Coombs his 2nd
loss of the season.
Other news and rumors: Houston's Bobby Doerr, this season's rookie, showed his stuff on this
day going 3-4, HR and 2 RBI. Could this be the missing link for the Astros? Maybe this will encourage the
Red Sox to pursue Doerr even more....the Pirates almost came back in the 9th, but the Braves were able to hold
on and get their first win of the season as Nehf came in to close the game...the Rockies manager seems to have
taken heed to the official team report and made some changes to the lineup. Koop choose the lesser of two holey
gloves, yanking Irwin from shortstop, moving Hughie Jennings back onto the field. Jumbo Davis got the can and
Coughlin got his starting job back. Sorry Rockie fans, it seems the weekly raffle "To Play with the Rockies"
has been cancelled. Also, a last minute decision was made to use a 5-man rotation this season. The pressures
of the media got to this manager. One of San Frans' Georges took the loss. (Didn't anyone notice that the SF
rotation has a theme - everyone is named George except for Rixey!) When the Colorado manager heard that he was
not the only manager swayed by the media, and that the Twins manager felt the pressure, Koop went on the record
to say, "Good. He deserves it after that trade with the Dodgers last season. May the curse rest upon his
team." I don't sense any bitterness here...Yes, in a knee jerk reaction to the DBL Reporter on the AL news,
the Twins manager made his second lineup change in just as many days. Greg may be doing a rain dance next
just to get Joltin Joe to get a hit...(DBLSN)

Orioles Coming Out Party
Quickly putting Day 1 behind them, the Orioles seized the day and the moment, scoring 12 runs agains the Jays.
All, except for Raridan, got a hit and Al Simmons got his first homerun as an Oriole. Dizzy Dean was chased out
in the 4th inning after giving up 9 hits and 5 earned runs...welcome back Leonard, your fans are glad to see you
again. The Twins held on to win by a run again; yet, the Clipper still hasn't collected his first hit of the
season. Hmmmmm....Boston rides the homerun airways of Ripper Collins, who not only hit one, but two homeruns
and drove in four runs. Lots of runs crossed the plate for the Yankees and the Red Sox, but the Sox more...

The "Best" for Last
The remainder of the Day 1 games have been finished. The "best" teams have hit the scene ready to have a better
season. For instance, the Royals held on to win 6-4. Doc White pitched like he was hired to do. McGuire
provided a homer for the cause...the Pirates look to turn over a new barnacle and make it a winning season.
The first of his unique rotation, Guy Bush allowed only one run in a Pirate win. Young pitched well, but
where was the hitting. The top three spots all went out for bagels and cream cheese....Twinkie fans were
delighted to see the return of Joe Medwick. Some fans were wondering where Joe had been. Rumor has it he was
working as the clubhouse boy for the rookie team last season. Medwick, glad to return, started the season
with a Game 1 homerun, and driving in 4-runs. Texas was no push over, only losing by a run...

..and a Few More
The AL East and NL West began their seasons with optimistic outlooks. The Orioles watched their ace, Russ Ford,
lose his first game of the season to the Jays. Mel Ott did hit his first long ball, a good sign for the O's...
Houston and LA went into extras in which the Dodgers dug deep into the pen. Zachary came up with the win on a
Sisler game winning RBI....Colorado started their Season 24 campaign with a win. Just to note, Jennings only
made one hit in this game...as for the Red Sox, Altrock and the Sox embarrassed the Yankees money pit, Christy
Mathewsonm with a 5-0 shutout...

Opening a Can of Worms
Season 24 is now open! Last season's champion, the St. Louis Cardinals , made a trip to the great city of New
York to face-off with the Metropolitans. Manager Foreman handed the ball to the rookie Hal Newhouser for Day 1.
Newhouser did well for his first day, as in keeping the earned runs to a low, but was unable to strike out
anyone and walked three batters. The Mets capitalized on a Hank Leiber walk, in which the manager quickly
replaced Leiber with John Fogarty of the bench. Fogarty did what he was hired to do - make something happen
on the base paths. Fogarty stole second then found himself at third on a sac fly. The Mets made the sign
for Boudreau to know the squeeze was on. Fogarty easily made the run to home, scoring the winning run.
Now that the season opener game is complete, several game from the AL East and NL West will commence on Monday.

Post Season Awards Handed Out
AL Awards:
MVP: Carl Reynolds, BOS. This is Reynolds first MVP award. If it wasn't for DiMaggio's low average, it would have Joltin' Joes.
Cy Young: Tim Keefe, TOR. Keefe hands down was the best pitcher in the AL. He had a ERA of 1.73, a winning percentage of 80%, and a
WHIP of 0.93. It is a shame Keefe couldn't help the Jays win the Series.
Rookie: Cecil Travers, MIN. Travers wasn't a starter in the beginning of the season, but after 40 games. Cecil was thrown into the
lineup. An island in a land of uselessness, Travers was able to shine out with a .270 batting average, which was probably the highest on the team.
NL Awards:
MVP: Hughie Jennings, COL. This was inevitable. Jennings hit over .400 for the entire season and never let up. It was a shame that
Jennings couldn't take his Rockies to the World Series.
Cy Young: Walter Johnson, STL. The voting for this was tight between Johnson and Coveleski. The decisioon came down to one important
stat - WHIP. Walter had 1.01 and Stan had 1.06, a mere .05 sttod between these two. The fact that the Cardinals made it to the World Series was
also a factor.
Rookie: Jumbo Brown, SF. It has been awhile since a pitcher has won this honor. For most of the season, it looked like Joe Gordon of
the Mets was on the fast track, but the more saves Brown collected, the focus came off of Gordon. Why? Brown set the single season record for
save. This is the second consecutive Giant to win this award.

The Changing of Seasons....
Season 23 is officially over and the off-season has begun. Waivers and trading are now reinstated for the new season. All managers need to begin
the process of getting their rosters in order. A date will be set when Season 24 will begin.
The new season brings about a new change. The leadership in Toronto will passing the torch to a new skipper. The fans demanded the Toronto front
office to find a new manager, since they never saw the manager at the games. Too many seasons without participating in free agency and lack of
interest in the rookie draft, plus the lack of fundage, has brought some resentment in the minds of the Blue Jay fans. Although the Jays won the
ALCS, the fans persistently sent their message to the front office for change. A new manager has been found. Jeff Haynes joins the DBL family and
hopes to live up to the traditions of this prestigious league. Haynes is new to this type of fantasy, so take it easy on him. The future of the
Blue Jays in the hands of Jeff is uncertain, but let it be known, the management will be active and strive for another winning season.

Cardinals Are Season 23 World Series Champs!
World Series - Game 5 Report: The many St Louis fans who made the trip to Toronto got a return on their investment. The red and white towels
busted out all over the stadium, and the twirling began. The Jays lost in their own house. Lefty Tyler found himself out the bottom of the pile
after the last out of the 9th inning was recorded. Walter Johnson pitched his heart out, knowing the lineup was a tad different with Hamilton and
Simmons were sitting out Game 5 with minor injuries. The replacement players did not disappoint. What was more disappointing was the Toronto
lineup. The Jays could only muster up a total of two runs in the last two games of the series. Two errors were the downfall for the team in Game 5.
Errors will always come back to haunt you in the end. Mell Ott left the game early with an injury, which brought in Gee Walker. Walker had one of
those two errors, and Doolan contributed the other. Walker and Doolan stayed in the dugout and waited until the coast was clear before heading for
their cars. There were several threats thrown their way while on the field. The Cardinals finally win their first World Series. The last time this
team was in a World Series was while they were under the guise of the Florida Marlins. Congrats to the manager, Steve Foreman, on his first
championship.

Jays Look Bumpy, Lose Game 4
World Series - Game 4 Report: Things aren't looking good for the Jay's number four pitcher, Bump Hadley (0-3). He has been struggling in this
all to important post-season. But is it really Bump's fault? He did limit the Cardinals to two earned runs. Let's take a look at the Jay's lineup.
Since the Wild Card and ALCS, the Toronto bats have been pretty silent against the St Louis pitching. DiMaggio, who hit a respectable .299 average
and knocked in a career high 71 RBIs, has nothing to show for himself this post-season. His average is sitting at a sub par .175 average, and
driving in runs seems to ba lost art form for him. If the Jays want to win this series, Joltin Joe will have to remember how to play like Joe. As
for the Cardinals, the pitching has been spot on so far in this series. Overall scattered five hits over eight innings while Tyler closed up shop.
Yet, there is something is going on of a different nature. First it is Hamilton, now it is Simmons who will miss Game 5. Big Al only lasted one at-
bat. In the bottom of the first, Simmons went all out for a short fly-ball and made an amazing diving catch, but he slightly sprained his wrist.
The team physician said it wasn't to bad, but advised that Simmons should sit out the next game. Now the Cards have Hamilton and Simmons sitting
out Game 5, which may be in the Jays favor. Will the Cardinals bench be able to handle their roles for the next Game? St Louis leads the series
3-1.
