How
is your soap made?
Our soaps are made using the cold-process method of soapmaking. This involves
the transformation of vegetable oils into soap through a chemical reaction process caused by combining the oils with sodium
hydroxide and referred to as "saponification".
If
this is my first experience with handmade soap, what might I notice?
For a lot of people, their skin has adapted to the detergent bars sold in the stores
and will feel different after using real soap. The most common difference I've heard about is due to the fact that the
mass-market detergent bars actually dry out the skin by stripping off the skin's natural oils. Keep in mind that
the skin needs a certain amount of oil to protect it from environmental factors. Because of the stripping action of the detergent
bars, a person's skin may produce more oil to compensate for the harsh drying out effect. Thus, many people consider
themselves to have "oily" skin. For those with "dry" skin, the skin's natural oil production mechanism has not been able to
adequately adapt and thus, during the winter months, the skin can actually feel quite dry as a result of the synthetic-laced
soap bar.
With the natural soap & glycerine remaining in tact in genuine soap bars, this
drying out effect tends to be minimized though there can be a transitional time for the skin where the skin seems to
feel oily after bathing. It takes some time for the skin's natural oil-producing mechanism to realize it doesn't need
to overproduce any more to compensate for the overdrying of the previous detergent bars, and rebalance itself.
My husband experienced this effect and it took about 2 weeks of using Sacred
Showers soaps before his skin balanced itself out. Now he no longer has "oily" skin, a "condition" he felt
he has had his entire life. What was most likely happening is the detergent bars he was using have been stripping his
skin of its natural oil, and his skin has been compensating with heavy oil production.
Does
Sacred Showers have soaps for a specific skin type such as dry skin?
These soaps are not
classified according to skin type. Everyone's skin is different and often changes from season to season. Our soaps are formulated
to be balanced for changing conditions rather than targeting isolated components. You may find one soap is more comfortable
to use during one season and another soap formula feels better during another season. As with any skin care product, however,
if irritation develops, discontinue use.
We have only one soap designed for a specific purpose and that is our Brewski Shave soap; it is formulated for shaving and uses bentonite clay with an extra generous
helping of castor oil and a dose of cocoa butter; can easily double as a body bar, too. While Bubbles
& Locks was primarily designed as a shampoo bar, it can be used as a body bar as well. People using this
soap have noticed stronger nails as well as hair.
Is one Sacred
Showers soap better as a facial bar than another?
Actually, I personally use every Sacred Showers formula
on my face as well as my body. However, everyone is unique so as in most of life, experimentation is sometimes helpful to
find what suits an individual best. Consider a sample box of 5 small bars if you want to target a specific
personal situation or email us. If you prefer an unscented soap as a facial bar, consider our Simple
Pleasures or Whispers soap. I have heard from several people who enjoy using the Honey
Tree soap as a facial and/or shaving bar.
Tell
us a little about the ingredients in the Sacred Showers soaps and how it is developed.
Our soaps are all natural and cruelty-free. Additives
such as clays, nut meals, honey, herbal tinctures and herbs are cosmetic or food grade. We use high quality and vibrantly
dynamic flower essences, the FES Quintessentials and Healing Herbs
lines, which provide distinct qualities and lend energetic support to a blend. Then we add pure essential oils which contribute
an aromatherapy element as well as many having distinct skin care properties. Finally, we consider vegetable oil profiles
in relation to the soap's concept and identity.
The soap formula is then designed and the soapmaking process
undertaken. The creative process is executed with all soapmaking elements purposely administered to create a synergistic soap
bar that will provide an enhanced bathing experience complimentary to both body and soul.
Great care is taken to enhance the very best attributes
of the soap ingredients during the blending process, including attention to environmental factors.
We think this carefully orchestrated methodology results
in a noticeable difference in the bathing experience.
